I was raised in the 50's. My tongue came of age in the southeast part of the United States.  Fried was best. Grits were sprinkled liberally with sugar. One of my favorite sandwiches was two pieces of white bread, liberally spread with mayo and then married with a filling of potato chips.  I still love all of that.  I'd still knock over old people for good, skin-on, fried chicken (are you listening, Bojangles????? over here!  West Coast!!).  And, I hate that I live in a world now where it is critical to clear communications that I specify skin-on since skinless chicken (the horror) is now the norm (the shame).

Anyway, recently I've noticed that my go to foods are not what they used to be.  I really like green beans now.  Growing up, the huge floor potted philodendron in the corner near where I sat at the table, got as many of my green beans as I could get away with disposing.

Then, [livejournal.com profile] ljtourist told me that Tillamook had a new Greek style yogurt that was amazing.  So I tried it and he was so not wrong.  This stuff is so rich tasting and creamy it's way more like pudding than yogurt both in texture and flavor.  I love pudding - chocolate, vanilla, tapioca... but honestly, if I had all three, homemade and perfect, and some of this new yogurt, I'd go for the yogurt - especially the vanilla and the coffee flavors.

But, the coup de grace - the one that really amazes me - is the snacks I got in my first Nature Box.  This is one of those periodical mailing things you sign up for.  $20 a month and you get a box of five different snacks that you picked,  I got half off my first order and found five that looked promising and signed up. EVEN though the site says in huge letters that these are "Wholesome Snacks" and that just goes against anything my tongue has any interest in.

My box was supposed to arrive on Monday but got here yesterday.  And, wow. They are all delicious and fun and interesting.  I really hate that I'm eating and enjoying wholesome and in one case, vegan! food but these are outrageously tasty and I do love a good snack.  I got 50% off my first box and had every intention of canceling before I was charged for my second one but that's not going to happen.  This shit is delicious.

I hear people say they LOVE junk all the time - kale and tofu and stuff that really, LOVE????  My personal barometer is...  would you LOVE it if it were bad for you?  I would love this yogurt and these snacks if they were bad for me. I would.  And that just shocks me.

Snacking tastefully, apps and web cams

Okay, you've convinced me to try Nature Box. I've been looking at the ads on Facebook for a while now, but just wouldn't bite the bullet. I go on and off a healthy vegan diet regularly, but always feel better physically and mentally when ON it. Right now I'm waaaay off, just having downed some chocolate and a handful of salty nuts. If there is a truly tasty healthy alternative to the junk food I love I will welcome it with open arms.

FYI: I found you via an iPhone/iPad app called W2W, which allows you to view live web cams from around the world. Someone commented on the app that they wanted to buy your bears and asked the moderator to find you. He did reverse check on your IP address and found your name and LiveJournal address. It's all very cool and kind of creepy at the same time! I'm sitting here making jewelry in my craft cabin in SC, watching you make bears in your home on the west coast. Technology is amazing. The feed from your cam is crystal clear. Would you mind telling me what brand of cam you use?

Have you ever tried the fried chicken dinner at Hi Life in Ballard on Sundays?

I went there once and like it. I've had Popeye's in, believe it or not, the midwest.

Have you tried Ezell's or Heaven Sent?

Heaven Sent was started by the man who started Ezell's. He had a falling out with his partners. I had Ezell's once many years ago, and haven't had Heaven Sent, so I can't say. Hope you enjoy it!

I've never had sugar on my grits. But, I only get grits a few times a year when I'm down south...
Maybe next time I'll try that.

Okay, you've convinced me to try Nature Box. I've been seeing the ads on Facebook and would just keep scrolling past them. I've been an on-and-off vegan (off right now) for a couple of years and always feel better when I eat cleaner. Does Nature Box have any kind of referral program where you'd get a discount on future orders for referring me?

Right now I have corn bread in the oven. Oy. LOL!

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I wanted to let you know that I got my NatureBox and LOVE the snacks! Even the chickpeas, which I'm usually not crazy about, were delicious due to the flavoring they put on them. I'm going to get a couple of more deliveries to try different items and see how it goes. Thanks again!

I have this kind of crisis too. They says our tastes change with time, and I guess they are right! My first real WTF moment like this had to do with veggies (as in, I still hate them but they taste good?). Other things like this include sweet potatoes and kale.

Do you have a Popeye's up there in the northern lands? We have them in California, and you couldn't want a more fried, skin-on chicken. Tastes amazing, but it's really, really fried (thick coating over the skin). So crunchy and greasy and good.

The few in this area don't have drive throughs -- that's all it would take to make it perfect!

I always order too much, too. The 10 piece 8 piece for $10. Used to be a better deal when it was 10 pieces, but 8 is still a lot and way more than I need.
