Today is my 65th birthday.  I've had a lot of good birthdays. I can't even remember a bad one.  My parents always told of my being two weeks late. They lived in an apartment in Brooklyn, New York, that was so tiny, the kitchen was too small for a refrigerator so it was in the living room.  My Mom's mom had come from Oklahoma before my due date to be there.  So the three of them had been sitting around in this tiny space for two weeks waiting for me.  The three of them always agreed that the miracle of my birth was that they didn't kill each other.

On my 16th birthday, all I wanted was my driver's license.  Mom took me to the license place first thing and I think it might have been the first and only test I ever aced. I drove home. My parents had brokered a deal with me that if I agreed to take over all of the chauffeuring of my younger brother and sister, they would buy me a car. So my Mom turned over her chauffeuring cap and went to play tennis and bridge and I got a 1960 used Ford Falcon. It had turquoise bucket seats. It looked just like this one. Even with the baggage of my brother and sister, it still felt like freedom to me.

My next most memorable birthday was my 35th. I had finally wrangled out of my giant mistake of a marriage and bought an adorable architectural tower (556 sq on 6 floors) of a condo. For my birthday that year, I bought myself a waterbed (super single size which was big enough for two people to enjoy sex but not big enough for them to actually sleep together comfortably).  I loved that bed.  And I bought myself my first computer.  A PC Jr.

Today the big deal will be a short trip up to the office of our bus system and get my Senior Discount Card.  For most of the 20+ years I've lived here, the buses have been free downtown.  A couple of years ago, they stopped that and it's really put a cramp in my getting around the city. Today ends that. The senior discount isn't as good as it used to be, of course, but, hey, I've earned it so today I'm off to collect.

Happy Birthday to me.

Happy Birthday!
That looks like a cool car!

My sister, a year older than you, had a similar deal for driving my brother and me around. She wasn't given a car, but was given unlimited use of one of my parents whenever she was home.
The deal worked out for all of us.

A very happy LXV! I hadn't realized, you're just about four months younger than I am.

Here in Philadelphia the within-city transit is free when you show your Medicare card.

Happy birthday!

My dad had a Ford Falcon of that era when I was a teenager, and I drove it quite a lot. Fun little car!

Happy Birthday, Susan--I've always gotten a kick out of your journal. And, I still use "Shaw's Pads", which was a recommendation you gave years ago, that you may not even remember :)
