One more Back in the Day story and then it's going to be a week of Mom reports, bitching about the heat, whining about the condo not being finished, etc. blah, etc.

But...

I just saw this: Dorm Cooking: Pork Tenderloin with Spicy Apricot Glaze and I gotta say a big old giant WTF??!!!!

Pork Tenderloin in a dorm room????? You won't get that kind of fancy cooking in my full function kitchen!

Back in my dorm days... We cooked in our rooms. Yes, we did. We were allowed 2 electrical appliances. So everyone had a hair dryer and one person brought the record player (which we called a stereo because it was - barely) and the other person brought the iron. (Two people to a room. Whole dorms confined to one gender. This was the dark ages, peops.) Our clocks were the wind up kind and our radios were transistor.

To make coffee we had to smuggle in one of those coil things to heat the water - instant coffee. We broke more than a couple heating up pans of water for Kraft Mac and Cheese. But our gourmet meal was grilled cheese made on the iron. Delicious. Or, if we were feeling a bit frisky, we did grilled peanut butter sandwiches. And, if you were careful, you didn't even get food on your clothes when you ironed them.

When I was in college, the only "cooking" equipment we were allowed to have was the lowly "hot pot," often used for heating water to make instant coffee, Top Ramen and Cup O Noodles. Now I suppose the kids use it for Kraft Easy Mac. I never tried to cook with an iron, mainly because I've never liked grilled cheese sandwiches. I don't even care for Panini.

The dorm did have a kitchen downstairs, but the stove was very temperamental. Many of us worked in the library and I got nominated to make brownies when the Cataloging Assistant had her baby. Suffice it to say we gave her partially cooked brownie batter before the raw cookie/brownie/cake batter (Cold Stone Creamery has Cake Batter ice cream!) thing was in.
