This printer thing is making me crazy. I woke up at 4:15 this morning stressing about it. I just cannot believe how this thing is kicking my ass. Besides need the occasional hard copy and scanning capabilities every now and again, it's a matter of pride.
About 5:15 I had a bit of a light bulb... I could try installing it on my little Fujitsu Lifebook. That would test both the printer and the cable.
So I did. I didn't bother to dig out and hook up the external DVD drive to install all of the crap on the CD. I just downloaded the print drivers and the twain drivers and installed them. I got some error messages and it was a bit of a cluster fuck, but I got them all installed and rebooted and BAM! I have printer and I have scanner.
Halefuckingloooya!!
So. It's not the printer. It's not the cable. I'm 99% certain it's not the USB 1.1 pci hub or the USB 2.0 pci hub or the USB ports built into the machine. My prime suspect is Windows XP - or at least as it currently lives on this desktop.
But, I think I'm going to take today off. Probably next weekend, I'll get back on the project. I think I'll start with replicating the install I did on the Lifebook - drivers only from the website. Failing that, I'll try Microsoft telephone support. Failing that, I'll reinstall XP on this machine. I probably should do a clean install but maybe I can buy a year or two with a reinstall.
Meanwhile, here's what started this whole thing. I wanted a digital version of Jake's baby picture. August, 1989. Can you stand the cuteness?

Date: 2005-08-28 03:49 pm (UTC)And good luck with the printer. What a mess. (I assume you've checked the web site in case there are updated drivers for XP, particularly service pack 2, from what came with the printer?)

Date: 2005-08-28 04:03 pm (UTC)Now that I've narrowed down the problem, I'm feeling better about getting a solution plus, now I do have the ability to print and scan here at home so things are decidedly brighter!

Date: 2005-08-28 05:06 pm (UTC)Mental note to self: have nothing to do with Lexmark, EVER.

Date: 2005-08-28 05:13 pm (UTC)Plus, the guy at OfficeMax yesterday dismissed Lexmark as an option really fast and I said "why? just curious" And he said their cartridges are the most expensive and their printers suck 'em down like they need a 12 step program!
Good note to self.

Date: 2005-08-28 11:18 pm (UTC)The printer companies make most of their money on the long tail of replacement cartridges, not on the original printer cost. And I notice several people realizing that it is cheaper to buy a new (subsidized) printer than to buy a replacement cartridge. Of course, the printer companies are making the cartridge installed on the printer smaller and smaller, so this may cease to be workable....

Date: 2005-08-28 10:41 pm (UTC)You didn't say how much you wanted to spend or whether she knits or crochets, but I would think any afghan maker might like a little bag of maybe:

and maybe a package of these cool labels

and

But, mainly, I'll bet she'll be thrilled that you went to the trouble!
Let me know if I can help further. Any friend of Ossie's... :)
