My plans for today are... swimming and that may be it. I'm not so motivated to go out to brunch. I have brunch makings here and I will be eating out a lot this week with my brother. And I don't really need anything at the grocery store since I have to go Monday anyway.
So, I think swimming. I'm hoping to get in at least 30 minutes, a half mile before the Saturday swimmers clog up the lanes OR a whole mile for an hour if they decide to go do some Seahawkian thing instead. It's swimmers who take up the whole lane, or go slowly and won't let you pass through or two or three swimming together who block your path. Those kinds of people turn up on Saturdays.
I don't mind sharing a lane at all. Sharing a lane with 3 or even 5 swimmers is fine if they are all polite. Even if they are slower than I am, if they are respectful and thoughtful they will pull over or stop at the end and let me swim through and that's fine. But lane clogging divas are not fine. Just one can make a lane unswimmable.
Here's hoping they all sleep in this morning, resting up for tomorrow.

Date: 2015-02-01 12:50 am (UTC)But aside from weather, what keeps me away is that I don't really know the etiquette for lane swimming. The last time I went to the pool I wasn't trying to swim laps - so I stayed in the warm water pool, and watched the lane swimmers.
A whole bunch of them were lined up outside when the pool opened - and they all split up and each took a lane.
So - I can guess that if I came in and there was a free lane, I would use that. But if I come in and all the lanes are in use - I guess I assumed that I would wait for someone to finish - but it sounds like instead, I should pick a lane with a swimmer in it that is similar in speed to me, and share?
When you share a lane, is there a ... preferred method? Do you try to time your swims somehow? Does each person pick a side of the lane or do you use the lane like a loop and go up one side and back the other and just "pass" like a car on the left ?
I wish there was a sign or something :)

Date: 2015-02-01 12:59 am (UTC)This is a good overview - the detail is at the top, the bottom has the top 3 overall guidelines

In general, unless signs say otherwise, yes, when you share a lane, find one with someone who's swimming at your speed. If there is only one person in the lane, ask if they want to split the lane - each take a side. If there is more than 2 people, you circle swim - you hug one side always.
At my pool there are 6 lanes and they are marked. The two outside lanes are Easy, the middle lanes are Medium, Fast and Fastest.
On the wall is a sign that says Circle Swim Always. If you are being passed a lot, move to a slower lane. If you are passing a lot, move to a faster lane.
Does that cover it for you? If not, ask away. I'm always happy to share swim info!
