I expected to have XP ask me if I wanted to repair or install.  What happened is that I had to boot from CD and then it said that the upgrade wasn't complete and did I want to complete???

So now it is installing XP.  I have no idea what, if anything, from my previous setup will survive - we're at least 37 minutes away from the next step.

Thankgod for this little laptop.  Actually, I thank [livejournal.com profile] fj, since it was in the picture of his desk that I first saw it.

Love my haircut.  Love the cool weather.  Thinking positively here.

The actuall underlying installation process for an o/s is ridiculously complex. But I think Windows is too inflexible in their installation method for expert users. You should never have to overwrite the enture o/s just because one component is refusing to cooperate; a company the size of MS should have a handle on their in-service diagnostics by now. Perhaps my expectations are too high?

To which part? I also work for a company that supplies people with equipment that has user loadable and configurable software on-board. We try very hard to give customers root-cause error messages, like "your network connection is down" instead of "error XYZZY reading key". I don't think 'user friendly' is friendly to high end users.
