[livejournal.com profile] photoholic62's right-on entry about hurricane Rita made me think of two things...

1. This morning Mom said that she called my brother this morning. He and his wife and two dogs are, right now, living in their RV just south of Austin, Texas. "This storm is wide - they are in the path and I know he's not watching TV so I told him he needs to get out of that damn RV or move it to Oklahoma. He said they are fine and not going anywhere. So... If he blows, he blows."

And she's serious and I love it and I realize I have that same DNA. Sure, if something happens to my brother, it would be terrible. But, he is an adult and he makes his own decisions. Mom did her bit. She made sure he knows what she does and that's it. She knows that no amount of worrying and fretting and hand wringing or pestering and begging him is going to change anything so she just lets it go. If he blows, he blows.

2. When we were little Daddy traveled nearly 8 days out of 7. He had a huge sales territory and he was gone a lot. We lived in the piedmont section of North Carolina (a little to the left of the middle of the state) and we got snow maybe once a year. They would start predicting it a day or two before and really rev up the crowd. We kids would get soooo excited. No school and snow angels! Mom would get sooooooo depressed. Kids underfoot, extra meals and mess.

One year it started snowing during the school day. Mark Harris's Mom was the first parent to arrive to pluck their child to safety. Others then followed. My Mom was nowhere to be found. Finally she gets there. My sister and I were nearly the last ones left. It was getting embarrassing. Finally she comes rushing in and explains to the teacher... "So sorry I'm late, I was totally out of bourbon and there was a long line at the liquor store." I was so glad when that school year ended and I got release from the pity in that teacher's eyes!

Your brother is very close to me. I am south and east of Austin. So, if I blow past your brother, I'll wave on my way! He'll recognize me, I'll be the one trying to hold on to all the fish, and my kids hanging from my shirt tail!

With all due respect, and not to put a hitch in your giddy-up ma'am ... Georgetown is NORTH of Austin. That's where my computer guru lives ... the one that you helped with your program so he could see my computer from his house. So, I need to find out more about the PC store so I can send my people to see your people!

And yes, if I blow past, I'll grab onto them too.

Hehe, now I'm flying through the air with hubby, two kids, a dog, a hundred fish and your brother and sister-in-law. I hope , OH I HOPE, I remember to grab the tequila as well!!

Glad to see your mother had her priorities straight even way back then.

You couldn't make up stuff like that.

All this parents driving kids around still surprises me; I was self transporting from age five. I took the public bus at five, walked to a different school at six, we moved and I had a two mile walk to a different school at seven and then back on public transport at 11 for an eight mile two bus trip. But then the UK is much more compact. My friends in NH are ten miles from where their kids went to school and they have frozen to death walking to school in the winter.

I lived in an RV in Texas for 10 years. Austin is probably pretty safe for him.

The only hurricane we ever worried about was Gilbert, and we were 50 miles northeast of Houston.
