1. This morning Mom said that she called my brother this morning. He and his wife and two dogs are, right now, living in their RV just south of Austin, Texas. "This storm is wide - they are in the path and I know he's not watching TV so I told him he needs to get out of that damn RV or move it to Oklahoma. He said they are fine and not going anywhere. So... If he blows, he blows."
And she's serious and I love it and I realize I have that same DNA. Sure, if something happens to my brother, it would be terrible. But, he is an adult and he makes his own decisions. Mom did her bit. She made sure he knows what she does and that's it. She knows that no amount of worrying and fretting and hand wringing or pestering and begging him is going to change anything so she just lets it go. If he blows, he blows.
2. When we were little Daddy traveled nearly 8 days out of 7. He had a huge sales territory and he was gone a lot. We lived in the piedmont section of North Carolina (a little to the left of the middle of the state) and we got snow maybe once a year. They would start predicting it a day or two before and really rev up the crowd. We kids would get soooo excited. No school and snow angels! Mom would get sooooooo depressed. Kids underfoot, extra meals and mess.
One year it started snowing during the school day. Mark Harris's Mom was the first parent to arrive to pluck their child to safety. Others then followed. My Mom was nowhere to be found. Finally she gets there. My sister and I were nearly the last ones left. It was getting embarrassing. Finally she comes rushing in and explains to the teacher... "So sorry I'm late, I was totally out of bourbon and there was a long line at the liquor store." I was so glad when that school year ended and I got release from the pity in that teacher's eyes!

Date: 2005-09-22 04:33 pm (UTC)North, South, East, West... Texas is big and I am clearly not paying attention!
But, now that we are coming full circle (my brother is the one who helped me get that program onto Mom's computer - he was there and I was here!)...
Barring any major blows (pun intended) here's the dets. He's doing on site stuff now and I think the store is supposed to open in October sometime.

Date: 2005-09-22 04:14 pm (UTC)All this parents driving kids around still surprises me; I was self transporting from age five. I took the public bus at five, walked to a different school at six, we moved and I had a two mile walk to a different school at seven and then back on public transport at 11 for an eight mile two bus trip. But then the UK is much more compact. My friends in NH are ten miles from where their kids went to school and they have frozen to death walking to school in the winter.
