Quiet...

Microsoft is having a 30th birthday party/company meeting for all regular employees all day at the baseball stadium near my house. So it's only me and the rest of the contractors here today... Pretty quiet so far.

I drove the car in today because I am on a gold fish hunt after work. I have two likely spots scoped out and both are very near here.

I was sure there was a McDonald's on the way here and close to here but I never found it. The only thing open was Jack in the Box. I am not a big Jack in the Box person and this morning may have actually been my first time. I would like to state, for the record, that their breakfast burrito is spectacular in its underwhelmingness. Next time, I'm going to find me a McDonald's even if I have to go out of my way.

I had my first New TV Season casualty last night. I didn't even make it to the half way mark of E-Ring. Killed it and its season pass. I had to watch a sure bet - House - just to get the bad taste out of my mouth. Nipping yet another soul from certain medical catastrophe in under an hour, did the trick. Sometimes predictability is comforting.

Tonight is a birthday party. My friend, Kieran, is turning a ripe old 33. He's throwing the party himself. He is a marvelous cook and has been working on the menu for weeks. I am a major carnivore and Kieran is a vegetarian. But he, long ago, proved to me that good cooking (and wonderful presentation) trumps the meat requirement any day. So tonight promises to be excellent. Plus, he and Alan have interesting friends.

I do worry a little about the wine. There is tons of it and nothing non-alcoholic and I just know that some night, coming home from here, I am going to get pulled over and sent to DWI prison. I need to figure out a way around that. (Kieran always asks if I'm ok to drive but since there is no good alternative to my not driving, I tell him... I'm fine.) Their house is not an easy taxi location. BUT, I've thought that one plan might be to the short distance to the major street where there are businesses with parking lots, park and call a cab and get the car via a bus the next day. If I need to, I can do that.

Rhetorical ques du jour: When you don't take the bus to work, when do you read the morning paper?

Do you have a tank set up and cycled and ready to put goldfish in? Two goldfish will need at least a 30 gallon tank, if you get fancy goldfish. If you get regular goldfish like comets or koi, now you're talking about 1000 gallon tank, or even more.

Sorry if I'm bumming you out. Goldfish are NOT beginner fish, and cannot thrive in small tanks. They also are not good to use to cycle a tank with, they are not hardy fish.

Haha, oddly enough, I didn't notice the typo at all. Yes, editing comments would be a much loved feature!

But you see, we are talking about the same thing. Fancy goldfish will get to be nearly a foot long if it is in a big enough tank. They also have a life span of 30 years in a tank. They get bigger and live even longer in ponds.

You can put two goldfish in a bowl. They will stunt. Have you heard the old wives tale that fish won't grow as big in a smaller tank? Well, what happens is the fish stunt. Stunted fish do not and cannot exhibit normal behaviour or colors. Their internal organs do not develop, they are prone to disease and live in pain. They eventually die in their infancy.

If you really want a small tank, try to get a 2.5 gallon tank, at the smallest, with a heater and a filter, and put a betta fish in it. No fish will thrive in a tank with no filter.

However, I will tell you that the smaller the tank, the harder it is to care for and keep stable. Bigger tanks give you more room for the 'fudge factor' and are more forgiving if things go wrong.

Putting two goldfish in a bowl like that is like putting two tigers in a small closet without fresh air.

Anytime ma'am.

Here is a link to an excellent message board all about fish. They have a whole section devoted to cold water fish, like goldfish. The board is attached to a really informative sight with lots of info about many different kinds of fish.

http://www.badmanstropicalfish.com/message_board/messages/board-topics.html

Hope this helps.

I already gathered what the decision would be. I think it is cruel, and it frankly surprises me from someone who loves her cats so much, but I think we can agree to disagree on this subject, yes? And now you have a link to further info and/or help if it's needed later.

I wish you the best of luck on this new endeavor, however that word may be spelled.

8^)

Nah, no so gracious. Folks agree to disagree about stuff all the time.

But, now seems like a good as time as any to tell you that I have always enjoyed reading your journal. I don't know how I stumbled upon your journal, but I know it was early on in my LJing, and I'm delighted that I did find you.

And now, I have a question. You reported the other day how much you spent on your condo-re-do ... I'm curious as to what you thought it would be when you started. Did the cost stay within the expected ball park?

I expected your total to be higher than that as well. My hubby does many of the types of things that were done on your place, so I know how costly some of those things would be. I didn't know about the furniture and carpet costs, etc. Was just curious if you were pleased or cringing.

I think it's all lovely! I bet you are very comfy in there!

coming home from here, I am going to get pulled over and sent to DWI prison

I spent the night in the San Diego Jail in 1972 for a DUI. Not fun. All I could think of was: Boy, if my mother could see me now. I never forgot it and was very careful after that. It affects your insurance for 7 years.

Much easier and safer to take a cab. Glad you are thinking ahead.

I read the paper when I get home in the evening

because I have to share it. But I catch bits of news on the browser throughout the day.

I was going to try and catch E-ring but I missed it. Now I don't feel so bad about that.

Did House seem even pissier than usual?
