That yarn on the left... I'm very curious ho exactly it self-patterns.

You and me, both! There are several brands that have the right sized (bigger than sock size) yarn that self patterns. It's kind of magic to me.

I'm a little afraid of such yarns when I'm knitting something that is not always the same width because you never know if the surprise will be good or bad.
