I am sewing a fleece jacket and knitting a wool sweater. In the August heat. I realized this yesterday and it made me chuckle. I think I'm just trying to imagine the cold when these will be needed!

I finally got to a great place on my sweater last night. I finished the front and back and attached them at the shoulders. Next is the 6" cowl neck and then the sleeves which are only 13" long. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I will have it done before the cold. Yeah!!

I think today, I'll get the cowl started and then get back to bears. I will finish the neck by the end of August and the sleeves by mid to end of September. Totally doable. Nice.

This is the last week that my former city pool is open. They will close until after Labor Day for maintenance. Part of me wants to go swim there once before they close but then I remember how I have to do it on their schedule and it's now so hard to get to with the road work and it's so loud and frenetic and just how much I love my LA Fitness pool. I'm so lucky to have it. Occasionally I'll swap a bit of chat with another swimmer there and invariably one of us expresses this same thing... 'aren't we lucky to have this pool?' YEP.

Hot hot weather. Of course this is Seattle hot and not Texas or Arizona hot but still. Too hot. Yesterday I did a couple of walk arounds down in the garage. It was almost too hot down there. I might do a Costco walk today. I don't really need anything but their aisles are pretty open on weekday mornings and I can do a brisk walking up and down them and see interesting stuff... in air conditioned comfort.

Yesterday I read the following journal entry and it had me thinking all day:

It is better to close your mouth and have people THINK you are stupid, than to open it and leave no room for doubt.

Never try to pretend you understand when you don't.

While I totally agree with the first sentence, I can't even come close to agreeing with the second. I spent my entire life and enjoyed several successful careers built pretty much entirely on pretending to understand when I didn't. For me, it's a great way to learn in a hurry. And I still do it today.

Off to the pool.

I recognized the clever aphorism about remaining silent, though in a different form, but didn't know where it originated. I used Google (hallowed be its name) and found a fascinating little web site called "Quote Investigator" which provided this article about the likely origins of the phrase. I thought you might be interested in it.

The second saying doesn't show up on Google, and I've never heard it before, so it's probably recent.

As for the first quote, I generally agree with that one, but the second one, with a caveat thrown in.

That is, if you DO pretend, best to at least have some knowledge/skill in what you are pretending in. Artists/creative types do best when they have a basic understanding of how and the whys of graphic design, even if they don't know the software, or new technique too well - and only then can you fake it until you make it, so to speak.

Just my two cents on that. :-)

I agree it's been hot, and reaching 85 or above is too hot, then again, I'm a native around here so it's normal for us natives to complain when it gets over 85 as we generally aren't used to it.

I'm glad that even when it hits in the 80's, it does not feel as oppressive as it did a month ago and that's cooling down quicker too.
