My favorite tip du jour
Oct. 6th, 2005 09:42 amI love my Gmail account. When it's down (which, fortunately, is rare), I am paralyzed. Nearly everything now - except LJ and Mom - goes through there.
One of the things I love about it is the spam filter. It is excellent. I only need one had to count the number of times it has misfired - probably only need 2 fingers.
Another thing I love is what I call the + factor. You can change your email address on a whim with a +. I use it a lot for notes. I have a filter called Notes. I have a rule that says send anything addressed to susandennis+notes @ gmail.com right to this folder. So when I want to save/remember something I just send a note to that email address. It's a handy spot for safekeeping.
In the olden days, I used to have susandennis.com set up so that any email sent to any email address with the last name of susandennis.com came to me. So when I signed up with Amazon, I used amazon @ susandennis.com - Half.Com got half @ susandennis.com, come. It was a grand scheme that got totally fucked over by spammers. I finally had to stop that madness and use only one susandennis.com email address per mailbox. Setting up more addresses on that domain is a bother.
BUT, with gmail's + factor, I'm back in biz again. Susandennis+amazon @ gmail.com and susandennis+whatfuckingever @ gmail.com. It's not foolproof but it's a nice little trick that I like.
