Wow. I was amazed and surprised and delighted at the response to my request for thoughts on publishing financial info.

[livejournal.com profile] topum told me that in Denmark everyone's finances are public record and in Moldova, knowing and chatting about everyone's money is common. Amazing and fascinating.

But, probably the single most compelling argument for my keeping my finance entries friends only was from [livejournal.com profile] mindyklasky. There are some legal issues that it could raise, cause or exacerbate that I really just don't need to chance.

Several people noted that they found the information interesting, informative and maybe even educational plus, I like the discipline and the recording of all of it so I will continue to post entries about my money, but they will remain locked down to friends only.

Our tax returns aren't public, but my husband's income is -- he works for the federal government. Several of our friends do as well, and it does add interesting layers to conversations.

Friend: I wish *I* had the money to buy a new house.

Me: (Thinking) You earn twice our household income. Your husband earns more than you do. Budget, dammit, and stop bitching.
