I was just catching up on LJ where I learned that John Spenser had a heart attack and died.  I'm so not happy.  What is Matt Santos going to do for a running mate? I can't have Alan Alda for a president. I just can't.

But, the other problem I have is that the rest of my reaction is "He was only 58??!!!"  I would have said 65 easy. 

I do not like it when people near my age drop dead and I especially do not like it when the report does not include phrases like 'died young' or 'premature death.'  Wonder what the cut off is for dying young?  How old do you have to be to die of old age?

No... it can't be Josh... but you do make a good point. They've already said that it's up to Matt from here on out, and the VP is really a nothingburger so maybe not so bad...

And since we're dancing on the grave anyway, can I just say how kind it was of him to hold off until the winter break to give the show time to plan his death maybe more gracefully than maybe Leo Who?

How old do you have to be to die of old age?

I say 100.

I was sad to hear of his passing - don't watch the show, but I enjoyed him in his breakout role in "Presumed Innocent".

I was thinking you had to be at least 90, but it could be lowered to 80 if you "die peacefully in your sleep". That could happen! I think. Or like to think.

Drag about Spenser; he was calm and straightforward about trouble with alcohol. I liked him.

I'm with you on that. I didn't like John Spencer for quite a while, since his stint on...LA Law, wasn't it? But gradually I warmed up to it on West Wing. And now I am really going to miss him.

I actually liked him on LA Law, but my memory is such an idiot. When I first started watching The West Wing, I thought "I've seen that actor somewhere before", but didn't remember his LA Law character until I checked IMDB.

We don't know how much of the current season has been shot already -- although the obit did seem to suggest that it isn't all of it -- so they may not have to do too much plot-rearranging. I've been wondering who was going to win that election anyway -- since this is almost certainly the show's last season, it could go either way.

Yeah, well, me neither (I'm 7 months older than Spencer), but I note that he was both a recovering alcoholic and a longtime smoker, neither of which is particularly good for one's heart.

I'm sad about John Spencer. I like him as an actor.
