  • Today I learned that Jane Roe (not her real name) of Roe vs. Wade was only 2 years older than me. She has long been my hero and I always thought she fought our battle as a mature woman. Turns out she was nearly freakin' my age!

  • Also I learned that Will Shortz is 3 years younger than I am. I always assumed he was at least a few years older if not more. Geesh.

  • I signed up for the New York Times again. They are having a President's Day sale and I fell for it. The 50% off is good for a year but I promise that in one year's time, I will be right back here bitching about their horrible unsubscribe policy. Meanwhile I plan to enjoy reading it. (And their current incantation of digital basic subscription is way better and cheaper than the last time I signed up. Plus that deal was only good for 6 months. So I need to remember all that when I get annoyed about unsubscribing.)

Roe v. Wade actually has another distinction in American legal history. Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who presented the oral argument for "Roe," became (and remains) the youngest lawyer ever to win a case at the Supreme Court, and the youngest woman ever to argue a case at the Supreme Court. Weddington was just 26 when she had to step in to present the oral argument due to lead counsel Linda Coffee falling ill.

I got a digital subscription to the NY Times back in November. They had a student rate that couldn't be beat. I got a similar deal for the Washington Post. I enjoy reading both of them, and was constantly running out of my free articles. I generally don't bother with student discounts, other than for software, but this worked out well.

I am often surprised to discover that some well-known person is younger than I thought they were. Of course, what I'm really reacting to is, "Hey,so-and-so is younger than me!" -- which is really at this point, most people.

But then I sometimes get the opposite reaction, as in this morning: Really? Sidney Poitier is 90? But then I think about the fact that he was making movies when I was in high school, and if I'm 70...

My favorite is Opey. Ron is my age exactly. I always thought of him as a young kid. Maybe I was watching re-runs.
