Dear People Who Want to Warn Me About My Webcams

I know my webcams are public. I understand that the world can see them. I am fine with that. You do not need to leave comments here, text me, leave comments on Twitter or Google+ with your assumptions that I am 1. uninformed/not very bright and 2. having webcams is dangerous.

My webcams being open to the public brings no harm to me and hurts no one else. While I cannot imagine that watching a 67 year old woman sit in her living room is very fascinating, I honestly do not care who watches.

Please see if you can refrain from telling me how to live my life. Thanks so much.

It amazes me how often you have to explain this to people. You have been doing the live feed for a long time now, I think you are well aware it's set to public. *lol*

Thank you! Sadly, the people who share your understanding are a teeny tiny majority. In the past 24 hours, I've gotten 2 direct messages via twitter, 2 G+ comments and 1 email all saying:

Did these people find your webcams accidentally? If they found them through the links you've posted to them I don't see how they could think you don't know they're public. That doesn't make sense.

There are several websites that troll for open webcams and post the streams there. That's mostly where people find the cams and then decide it's there job to tell me that I shouldn't have the cams.

None of the above. I did flash a boob once - I believe it was 2002 and it was only 1 - but I'm pretty sure that's not something an enquiring bear would actually care about.

7-9am = sitting in living room at computer
9-noon = see sewing cam
noon-1 = sitting in living room at computer eating lunch
1-3pm = see sewing cam
3-9pm = sitting in living room at computer, maybe knitting
9-12 = out of camera range

One thing - I used to have sound but not anymore. There is a speaker icon, but no sound either way. Did you do that on purpose?

I used to think it was funny to hear Jeopardy at your house. :)

Yes, I did turn the sound off. You'll just need to imagine Jeopardy. It's still gets played every night :)

Ooh, I remember the audio. And the ability to make a noise on our end that you could hear. You'd wave. Although I'd imagine some people would just keep pressing it over and over and get annoying. ;)

I check in once every few days. Usually TV watching or knitting is going on.

Ha, that was actually a different kind of camera and set up (and a long time ago!). It was attached to my PC and the software would beep whenever someone fired up the URL of the camera. That was kind of cool.

Both of my current cameras allow you to hear (if the function is turned on) and one of them allows you to talk (again if the function is turned on). But neither will do what that old setup did. Sigh.

Yeah, Susan Dennis TV Network is not known for thrilling programming :)

I totally understand what you're saying.

But I don't understand what *you* get out of having the webcams up. If you feel like it, will you talk about that a bit?

Oh that's simple. It's a deal I have with my brother. He has webcams in his shop so I can see (and hear) him and his staff every day which I really enjoy. In return, I have webcams here so he can check on me any time he wants.

I could easily lock them down with passwords (and I have in the past) but it's a pain in the ass for both of us and I really don't care who sees what so I don't.

But - going for extra credit here - it started with my mother. Web cams were cheap and I figured out how to network a cheap one. Daddy had just died and she lived alone 3,000 miles away. She loved her computer so I showed her how to see me. She LOVED that. She would send me emails 'you really going to wear that top with those pants??' and 'hair cut time... only your mother will tell you the truth'. It was always hilarious. At one point I had one on me and another one aimed at the TV so she could see what I was watching.

So webcams also have sentimental value to me.
