12 years ago my microwave died and I replaced it with an Advantium which is a fast cooking oven and a microwave - a combo. It's fabulous. So fabulous that last year I replaced it. It's life span is about 8 years and I had pushed that already and didn't want to chance it. The new one is even better than the old one. Easier to clean, more bells and whistles.

In all that time, for some reason that I do not know, I never used it to cook a baked potato. I love a good baked potato so I fire up the big oven and wait for freakinever for it to get to 425 and then bake my potato for an hour-ish. Today I decided to have a baked potato for dinner and for some reason that I do not know, I decided to try it in the Advantium. The oven has pre-programmed cooking 'apps' and has one for baked potatoes. So that's the one I used. 11 minutes start to finish.

And it was exactly perfect.

Why in the hell did I wait 12 years to figure this out????

My parents still praise me for showing them how to "bake" potatoes in the microwave, which I learned while in college. Praise. Me.

I made it work with a combination of the two: preheat the oven to 450 while "baking" the potato through in the microwave, then stick the potato in the hot oven for 10 minutes or so to crisp the outside. It's sort of analogous to searing a steak on the stovetop and finishing in the oven.

That's pretty funny. I usually prefer things cooked in an over, even though it takes so much longer.

11 minutes for a baked potato? I need one of those! :P

I only bake potatoes in the oven if I am baking something else at the same time. And if I bake potatoes in the oven, I bake as many as possible.

Long ago, my mom gave a microwave steamer, and it makes really good "baked" potatoes, in about 10 minutes for 4 (medium) potatoes and about 12 minutes for 6-8 (medium potatoes). I like the crunchy skin of an oven-baked potato, but not as much as I like a 12-minute "baked" microwave potato.

That made me laugh. Baked potatoes are the second-best reason for having a microwave (after heating up leftovers). I don't have a fancy microwave, so I cook them through then finish in the oven for a bit of crispiness when I can. Otherwise, I just microwave and enjoy it slightly less.
