The email I just got had a lot of little tid bits in it and then this:

One more thing.  I know I am not remembering things always.  I also know I get mixed up.  No matter how many notes I write myself things still go wrong.  I am just telling you this because I want you to let me know when I do something seriously wrong.  Do not be bashful.  I assume it will get worse and worse, so let me know.

She really has gotten much worse lately but it is comforting to know that she knows and that she is someplace safe and happy and not worried.  I wonder how you live in the kind of fog that she does much of the day and still get the insight and focus to know you aren't all there.  It's a mystery.  But, I assured her that I would make sure she didn't do anything wrong or harmful.

I think I felt the exact same way - happy and sad. And, you know what? It means so much to me that I share her with all my LJ friends.

How wonderful that she realizes this.

My aunt who passed away a couple years ago was a real mess mentally as well as physically before she went. She didn't realize it though, and got really paranoid about things because she couldn't understand her condition. We just had to laugh about it at the time because if you took her too seriously it would break your heart. Sad things like accusing her caregivers of stealing her spring water, or thinking she couldn't afford her medicines. (she died with something like half a million dollars in savings, so finance wasn't an issue.)

I'm so glad that you're not going through the same sort of thing with your mother.

Yeah I am so lucky. She also still remembers when her father (living with her mother in an assisted living facility even years ago) called 911 - more than once - to report that his wife had stolen his pants. Fortunately, they lived in a very small town and everyone understood. And, gratefully, we laughed then and now. I am so lucky.
