Crap.  Mom needs sitters 24/7 for at least the first week or so.  The 'home' helps in getting the aids who work there but want extra duty to do these sitting duties.  They are paid privately.  The trust department at the bank pays Mom's bills but paying these women for sitting is turning out to be a BFD.  They won't write a check unless they have their social security numbers and addresses.  Mostly these women get cash under the table.  I got no one to gather personal information and then get it to the bank and then organize time sheets and turn them in and go back and pick up checks for distribution.  Fuck.

The woman at the bank bent my ear 8 ways to Sunday about how paying them cash or just writing them a check was so wrong.  Well, you know what, lady??  I got bigger fucking fish to fry.  Crap.  Now I've got to figure out where Mom's checkbook is, and how I can get someone to either forge her signature or help her scribble something on a bunch of blank checks.  Fuck.

I have not heard from Polly today.  I don't know if that is good news or bad.  She has a very full schedule today with some other people so I'd really rather she give all her free minutes to Mom and not waste them on me.

Oh, heck, I'll just call Mom's room and see what happens...

Ok!  Mom answered after a bit and sounded VERY good - clear and crisp and not at all drugged up.  She could not hear me well and said it was hard to hold the phone but she was able to tell me that her doctor had not been by yet but they thought he might show up about lunch time.  She did not sound sad, or mad or frustrated.  She sounded resigned and calm and nearly chipper.  Whew.

And my sister sent her travel details - no note or explanation - but the ticket is for 1 adult so I guess she decided against bringing children.

Meanwhile I sent a note to my brother to see if it would upset his wife if I had to ask her to forge Mom's signature on checks. (I think she's pretty intimidated by me and I didn't want to put her right into an uncomfortable situation by asking her directly.)  I got a fast answer back (with her on the cc) saying that she would be happy to do that or figure out another way but in any event, she would see that the sitters got paid.  Whew.

Ok, now I need to get up and get a shower.

Would it not be easier to get cash out, pay the sitters as they are used to being paid, and then have Mom pay the sister-in-law back with a check (or get the check from Mom cashed by the sister-in-law up front)?

your plan only works

if the checks are deposited and not cashed. cashed checks historically get extra scrutiny at the bank, whereas deposited checks just go into a bin to get processed by machines.

You should get power of attorney, that way you can sign checks for her.

Now you'll never be Attorney General...

Wow! This is what I get for reading everything late. Sorry to hear about your mom's fall and the ensuing fallout. Well wishes for her recovery and for your sanity in dealing with it long distance.
