For most of my adult life... All except the last decade really, I never lived the kind of life where having strangers drop in was possible. My house was always too messy. Not even dirty really, just messy. I had too much stuff and none of it was put away. Then I did a major purge and redecorated this condo and finally had a place for every stuff. It still took a few years to form the habit of keeping everything tidy.

Today I had 6 people in here. 4 of them have lived here as long as I have (25 years) but never been in my place and 1 is new and 1 is the consultant I had never met. I did nothing but open the door and welcome them in. It was like checking off a big item on my adult list. After the meeting, two of the people stayed behind to ask 'who did your mural, where did you get this piece, what's the story behind that one? Ohhhh, I love this...' it was very cool and very gratifying. I was pretty proud of me.

The meeting was actually pretty interesting. All of the people present brought relevant, creative, interesting ideas to the table and no one was a pill at all. It was good. And cool. The air conditioner is really working hard and doing a great job.

After the meeting, I had lunch and I made a rabbit. I didn't have anything big cut out and I figured it would soon get too hot in the sewing room (and I was right) so I made a quick bunny.

And I have cold fried chicken with cottage cheese and apple sauce for dinner. Yummy.

I love the bunny! I definitely vote for the tribe.

I'm glad that having people over was a success! It's always hard to know how that's going to go...

My place is so cruddy right now, still I wouldn't mind if a person came over. It is what it is. You can only do so much when you have three people crammed into such a tiny space.

Life changes after a purge. After I did Marie Kondo I (do) love having people pop in more than ever. If I have to straighten up a bit before, it is so minimal. And when I dread getting something I use rarely, say, from under the sinks, I realize every time it's not even that big a deal cuz everything is so essential and organized now!

I love the bunny's back. Bunnies rock.

When my son was growing up, my house was a mess, too -- like you, not "dirty", but cluttered. I didn't take the time to purge, or even consider the upgrades our house needed.
House organizing was low on my to-do list as I was immersed in so much else. I hated when people would come over, which was as little as I could manage. Something changed about 10 years ago, and I'm not sure what motivated it. It started subtly - one space at a time, but little by little I went into purge mode. We also we upgraded gradually, too, and now it's mostly done. It's so freeing have a place for everything we own (not things stacked in corners!), and to be able to have people over on the spur of the moment, and without feeling shame. I totally get what you're saying. It's easy to collect things - and daily I have to remind myself that not everything is a momento!

It's hard to imagine you weren't tidy, having spied on you in your tidy place for a little while now.

I'm oh-so-slowly and weirdly painfully switching to tidy myself, but have a LONG way to go. And am often overcome, overwhelmed, drowned, really fucked up, etc., by/in the trying.

What, no joke about how you made the quick bunny, quick, like a bunny?

One thing I love about LJ is taking sentences out of context.

"After the meeting, I had lunch and I made a rabbit."

Now there is a sentence. I think it stands on its own and needs a painting to go with it. Something by Du Champ or one of those guys.
