The upside of cellphones
Jan. 14th, 2006 04:26 pmI watched Sideways. It was ok.
By the time it was done, the game had started so it was safe to wander. I decided to wander up to Pike Place Market and see if one of those kitchen stores had any good tiny spoons. (I'm still hooked on egg cups but I really need a decent spoon.) So, off I go. It's off in the rain. It was actually mostly a serious drizzle and not very cold. In fact, not really cold enough. Or rather my jacket was too heavy.
But, off I go. It was interesting to see the kind of people who were out while most everyone was in watching the game. There were a curiously high number of baby strollers.
Sur La Table has tall shelves. You can hear people you can't see. Other shoppers. On their cellphones. Before cellphones all you could hear was shoppers talking in low whispers to each other. But, it's a new day. There are inside voices, outside voices and cellphone voices or quiet, loud and REALLY loud.
"My parents want us to meet them for dinner at the club with their boring friends." "No, we can't. Bobby doesn't have the day off. Fucking Microsoft hates blacks."
I had to see this one. I wish I had snapped a picture. 30 something. Blonde as blonde could be. Matching everything - her cellphone cover matched her purse. It was a moment.
I found tiny spoons. I meandered around and wandered home. You could hear the football crowd a good six blocks from the stadium. Wild.
