Polly just called and Mom's still breathing but it's a struggle. The doctor wanted to see her today so she went and he gave her a choice of hospital or some kind of steroid that she has to get every three hours. She picked the steroid. She does not want to go to the hospital and she does not want to go into the nursing wing.

Polly and I (and Mom and my brother and sister and, now her doctor) are all on the same page about this. She's happy and not worried and not stressed and as comfortable as she can be - if it's time for her to breathe no more, it's time. If she can get well on her own from her own apartment in her own chair then great and if not, then not.

I just sent a note to my brother and sister and sister-in-law and gave them the straight up skinny. I debated doing that because she just does not have the energy for any visits and I didn't want them hoping on a plane. I ended up sending the note and just including in it that now was not the time to visit and there was nothing any of us could do but send healing thoughts.

When I was there at Thanksgiving, we got tied up in a conversational knot over something or the other and finally I said 'Ok, wait a minute... let's stop and take a deep breath...."

She interrupted me and wheezed with a huge smile on her face... "easy for you to say". That's my Mom.

I hope this turns out for the best, whatever the best may be. I'm glad she still has a sense of humor about it all.

Your Mom is great. I wish her and you all the best. [And I see more than a little of that feistiness in her daughter.]

A few years ago Ma viewed steroids as one of those no-turning-back gateways. So she resisted well past it being sensible to do so. After the last couple of hospitalizations she decided that was silly. So twice a month she goes on prednisone (sorry if I spelled it wrong; ain't that kinda doctah). it disrupts her sleep, makes her move a bit more slowly, but she can breathe...sorta.

Sending Mom some mojo...

You are a good daughter protecting her boundaries and seeing that her wishes are respected.

Hang in there. Hugs from a friend.

Your poor mom - she sure is a trooper, though.

Sending good thoughts for a speedy recovery.
