The Mom Report
Feb. 20th, 2006 03:48 pmPolly just called and Mom's still breathing but it's a struggle. The doctor wanted to see her today so she went and he gave her a choice of hospital or some kind of steroid that she has to get every three hours. She picked the steroid. She does not want to go to the hospital and she does not want to go into the nursing wing.
Polly and I (and Mom and my brother and sister and, now her doctor) are all on the same page about this. She's happy and not worried and not stressed and as comfortable as she can be - if it's time for her to breathe no more, it's time. If she can get well on her own from her own apartment in her own chair then great and if not, then not.
I just sent a note to my brother and sister and sister-in-law and gave them the straight up skinny. I debated doing that because she just does not have the energy for any visits and I didn't want them hoping on a plane. I ended up sending the note and just including in it that now was not the time to visit and there was nothing any of us could do but send healing thoughts.
When I was there at Thanksgiving, we got tied up in a conversational knot over something or the other and finally I said 'Ok, wait a minute... let's stop and take a deep breath...."
She interrupted me and wheezed with a huge smile on her face... "easy for you to say". That's my Mom.
