Last Sunday, Mom called me while I was out in the car. I pulled over and we chatted. She could hardly breathe. She was confused and I thought - not for the first time - that this might be the last time I ever talk to her.
Today, I just called her and got a totally lucid, totally focused hardly congested at all Mom who was really interested in my getting on Polly's ass about getting rid of at least two of her sitters and letting her be on her own at least some of the time!
Mom: Polly was here this morning and I told her I thought I was ready but now I know it and I can't find her. I think she's busy with other people. I need you to find her and tell her.
Me: But, we're coming up on a weekend. Are you really comfortable doing this with a weekend coming up?
(Things always go to hell in a handbasket there on weekends.)
Mom: Yes, I can do it. I can walk fine. I can get to the dining room and back easily. I'm still shakey but only in my hands - otherwise, I'm fine.
Clear as a bell with total conviction. Ya gotta love it. So I called Polly's cell phone and left a voice mail telling her that Mom was on the warpath and she should call me if she needs help but I was fine with firing all the sitters if she wanted.
I'm thinking that if/when Mom ever does die, we'd be smart to wait a week before we cremate her. She's liable to come back from the dead and she'd be way pissed if she did and discovered she was ash!
