I've never been comfortable with writing to strangers and begging to be added to their list. I mean what if I hate their journal that I've now had to beg to read?

I totally get that my own view of how LiveJournal operates is out of sync with the rest of the world, I'm playing the old lady card. I don't care and I don't have to.

If you give me permission to read your journal, thank you.

Oh I totally get doing that. I tend to add people that way too. I'm sure it's frowned on, but like you said it's uncomfortable asking to be friend someone before you even have seen what their journal is like.😆
I've only had a couple instances in all these years where I got a message that says something along the lines of "who the heck are you, and why did you add me', so it can't be too taboo, I hope.. *lol*

Yeah I don’t get at all the “Comment to be added” thing. Like, unlock a few samples? Sometimes I don’t care for the journals of the people who add me, so I don’t add them back, easy peasy indeed. Now I don’t care if they read mine obvs, it’s open, and obviously so good :’D *slaps knee*

Oh I forgot to add, it is totally fun when someone locked AND good adds you & suddenly you can read all this good stuff you didn’t even know existed.

It is awkward. I guess you make a few comments then quietly defriend them.
