I got a new set of flatware yesterday and I grabbed a frying pan.

The flatware was really the reason for the trip. I thought they sold some flatware in single pieces but that was wrong. Frank and I both tested all the forks for balance. We only found one that was not horrible. Turns out, however, that one was also one of the most visually appealing options. So I bought it.

I have now tested it for two meals and... we have a winner!!! The fork has really really nice mouth feel - both sizes. I'm such a happy camper about this.

I've had a frying pan issue for some time. I had a good set but the handles are bolted and kind of lose so I've been on the lookout for replacements - a big and a little. I've now gone through several. I have an induction stove top that works via magnets. And, so, if the middle is bowed even slightly and out of the magnetic field, you get no sympathetic heat. I've learned to saute in a ring pattern but no fun.

I used the new frying pan this morning and it is PERFECT! Solid and flat and so has a way bigger cooking surface that my other pan that is even bigger. Happy Happy. Goodwill, pans commin' at ya.

I have a music player for swimming that I love. I thought the battery was dying in it but discovered this morning that the player is fine. The operator is flawed. Apparently, I had not charged it up when I thought I did. I carefully charged it yesterday and this morning, after my swim, there was still 77% left which is perfectly acceptable. Whew! I was not relishing any of the options if it was dying. But it's not, so yeah!!

So far this morning, since I got home, I've eaten breakfast and piddled on the internet. click here, look up that, open that tab, forget why I wanted a new tab, look up this, click on that... the usual drill.

They are predicting snow this afternoon/evening. I'm sure it's all prediction, no precipitation as usual but I'd love them to be right.

I think I'm going to go make a few bears and then probably settle in for TV. I have CBS Sunday morning to watch and then Victoria. I have 3 episodes saved up.

That reminds me - I dropped off 3 bags of stuff at Goodwill yesterday but forgot to add the 2 frying pans I never use. They are sitting in the garage on a shelf, mostly forgotten about.

What music player do you have? I don't need one for swimming, but whenever my iPod Nano 3G bites the dust, I'm going to be really sad if I can't find a replacement.

We've got almost the same cutlery, I guess it is a slightly older version of the same style. We tried to get another set a few years back and they weren't doing it at the time

I bought some new cutlery recently too - it was surprising how often, considering there are only two of us most f the time, we ran out of knives in particular.

I was a little dubious that we'd actually get any snow, too... and it's been coming down like crazy for a few hours now. It started as graupel and then turned to big fat flakes. It's sticking on the grass and is starting to pile up... could make for some interesting roads tomorrow.

Oh - I like the look of the flatware. Very modern and simple.

Flatware

[livejournal.com profile] jwg and I were out to dinner the other night, and he remarked (jokingly, and only to me) that he couldn't eat because the server had left his knife and fork on his right. But I think he called it "silverware", because he then immediately wondered if anybody ever said "silverware" any more, given that silver (or silver-plated) utensils are vanishingly rare these days.

So I note with interest that you called it "flatware", and [livejournal.com profile] zoefruitcake called it "cutlery". I'm not sure what I would say without thinking about it; maybe "utensils", but quite possibly "silverware" or maybe even occasionally "silver".

My parents had both silver-plated (for everyday) and sterling silver (for special occasions) flatware when I was a young child. I think both sets -- very different patterns, but both with a "C" engraved on the handle -- came from their wedding. At some point fairly early in my memory they stopped using the silver-plated stuff -- I think the plating had worn rather thin -- and used the sterling exclusively (which meant it had to be polished fairly regularly). In later life (long after I had grown up and moved out) they switched to mostly using stainless steel.

I'm not sure what happened to all the silver -- maybe my brother has some of it, or more likely we disposed of whatever was left, if any, after my father's death.

(For people below a certain age who may not realize this: Stainless steel flatware did not exist in the 1950s.)

We don't use the term flatware at all in England, it's all cutlery if it is used on the table and utensils in the kitchen. A full set of cutlery like you might receive for a wedding present with serving spoon and fish knives etc is called a canteen
