Early morning baseball

The baseball season opened at 2 am PDT this morning in Tokyo. TiVo saved it for me. I have successfully avoided finding out any details about the game and I'm watching it now. In the 3rd inning, one of our new players just hit his first career grand slam. I'm ok with this season so far!!

We have one more hot day and then we go back to our normal, pleasant weather. I'm ok with that. The stuff in the air is really bugging me and I'm hoping cooler will be better.

Ichiro is playing for the Mariners in this game and it is such a joy to see him play even as now a very old player. He's so very classy in everything he does. He was just walked and quietly put his bat down before he trotted off to 1st base. They just said that there are six players on his team that were not born when Ichiro started playing professional baseball.

Today is house cleaner day. While she's here, I have a car full of stuff to take to Goodwill and some shopping to do there as well. Then probably a stop at the grocery. If I remember, I will gas up the car.

I need to get a manicure. My cuticles look like they've been kissed by a weed whacker. If I happen on a walk in place between here and there, I may just walk in. I love my hands after a manicure. I hate sitting still for one. But, it's time.

This game is way more interesting than I expected. Also the guys doing the game on ESPN are interesting and not obnoxious. Usually, when the Mariners play in a nationally televised game, the announcers drive me nuts. but not this time. Cool.

I was quite startled to realize, when I looked at the ESPN.com site this morning, that the season had actually started -- for those two teams, in Tokyo. And then I saw that the Mariners will play two more exhibition games at home before the Red Sox arrive to start their season.

I think having these early games in Japan is really weird. In June the Sox and Yankees will play a pair of games (which would have been in Boston otherwise) in London. This must be good for somebody (owners, I guess); it's sure not good for either the fans or the players.

I'd be ok with it, not crazy about it, but ok, IF these games didn't count but starting the season this way is really not kosher. And playing games that count, then games that don't then starting the season is nuts. At least by the end of next week, we'll have all this silliness behind us. Your London thing is capital N nuts. London?? Who the fuck cares in London?

However, it is lovely, as Twitter just pointed out, to spend at least 24 hours with the very best record in all of Major League Baseball. We Mariner fans take joy where we can find it.

ESPN made a lot of noise about the crowd reaction when Ichiro was pulled from the game. Sounds like they liked him.

OTOH, I think it is a travesty to start the season overseas.
