While I searched, fruitlessly, for a podcast app that the Google Assistant likes that has playlists, the Mariners have already blown a 4 run lead. It now 9-4. We have this pitcher who used to be great. But he has not been great now in 2 seasons and this season he isn't even acceptable. Yes, he's beloved but even Ichiro knew better than to take up a team slot on the field after he aged out. Felix needs to find a job in the ticket office or just retire already.

Grrrrrr

There is a gigantic yardsale at a neighborhood nearby and some of the advertised stuff looked interesting and then there is the twice a month flea market between here and the pool. I considered both but in the end came home to the air conditioner. Sun and 80 degrees. Not a combo that I enjoy.

My air conditioner is saving the day. It's lovely and cool here in my living room.

The litter box tells me that Zoey is feeling better. Quite joyful to find little torpedoes of kitty poop in there.

The other day, I heard on a podcast, a couple talking about things in their families growing up that were Signs of Wealth. The woman said Kleenex. Kleenex was for rich people. Her family used toilet paper when they had to blow their nose. The guy said berries. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries. Rich people fruit.

In my house it was paper towels. We often had none in the house. If we had a roll, we were never allowed to use them. I remember being awed by the TV commercials where the people would just willy nilly peel off a sheet whenever they spilled anything. Even then, I thought it was weird that they only used rich people in commercials.

I always have a roll of paper towels but amuse myself by rarely using them. I forget about them.

Oh, gym news. As I was leaving today, I waved at Frank The Front Desk Guy and said "See you Monday!" He has Sundays off. He called me over to explain that starting week after next he's moving to Sundays and Mondays off! BFD. Two days off in a row. Wow. Whatever is he going to do with that big stretch of time??! I thought it was very cute that he wanted to make sure I knew.

Ok, time to clean up the kitchen.

I am trying to remember...but there was very few paper in my childhood. We had some kind of paper towels but it really was just the same identical recycled stuff as the toilet paper, only larger sheets. It really hurt your nose after a while when you had a cold!

Germans always have been big against waste, who needs comfort when they can be righteous!

We never had paper towels, we used cloth. We also used the same towels for a week and didn't have a clothes dryer. I didn't eat real vegetables until my 20s because we just didn't have them but we had lots of watermelon from my grandfather. Weird how our brains associate things.

I use Google Podcast for some of the things I listen to but I am not sure how that pairs with Assistant.

I still reserve paper towels for special purposes only. When I watch cooking shows and videos I'm astonished to see people blotting raw chicken with paper towels!

OMG THE PAPER TOWEL THING IS SO TRUE. We never had them growing up. I still can't afford them today at nearly 40. Once in a while someone will buy me a pack of them and omg, I feel like I'm an actual real adult when I have them. Living large not using old rags to do all my cleaning.

And glad to hear the kitty is doing better. It sounded worrisome on your last post.

The other thing I hoard is aluminum foil - so much so that my sister has given me a roll as a gift on several occasions! Line a pan so I don't have to wash it? That's just nuts. LOL

No paper towels for us either. My mother had hand crochet dish cloths she made from cotton and there were different coloured ones depending on if they were for dishwashing, wiping up kitchen messes or general cleaning, wiping down things. We had handkerchiefs to blow our noses (no fancy tissues for us) and toilet paper was often newspaper or wrapping paper from the butcher cut into squares and threaded on string. I dreamed of having proper toilet paper and Kleenex when I grew up and even today I'm fussy about the toilet paper I buy - no way am I having anything hard and scratchy again!

Lovely to hear the kitty is on the mend.

I'm very happy to hear Zoey's doing better.

Really interesting seeing different cultural approaches in the discussion about the rich people stuff. Fresh berries are still rich people food in NZ - $3-$6 for a small container depending on the berry and time of year. I was amazed when I was in Los Angeles at how cheap the organic berries were in Whole Foods (no cheap immigrant labour in NZ). I was also struck by the towels thing - I still use towels for a week (aren't you supposed to be clean when you use them?) and although I have one I don't often use a clothes dryer, I use a washing line in the garden. I think that's pretty typical for here. For me a sign of wealth when growing up was the fancy version of anything. An ice cream cone with sprinkles or whatever, extra sauces or toppings on something you had to pay for...we always just had the basic version. And also store bought stuff. Clothing was expensive in those days and my mother made most of my clothes. All cooking was done at home too so I thought cake from the supermarket was very glamorous. I didn't know how lucky I was getting handmade stuff.

When I lived in the Middle East, bananas were this crazy luxury food. Berries were expensive too, but the price of bananas was probably 5x what you'd pay per pound in the US. Spaghetti squash was worse, like $20 for one.

The Red Sox radio announcers noted that this is the last year of his contract, and were of the opinion that the Mariners were very unlikely to sign him again, and also seemed to have a low estimate of the probability of any other team wanting him. Some excellent players are better than others at realizing that their time is over.

I'd offer my condolences for these two games but you'd know I didn't mean it.

We were pretty affluent and over indulged but I do remember what seemed to be a constant struggle to find a bit of blu tac or a pair of scissors. I can't figure out why I didn't just buy some blu tac, it wasn't hard to find in the shops or expensive! I now have LOTS of pairs of scissors and always a pack of blu tac even though my need for it isn't great now as I don't have countless posters to put up on my walls

Popsicles --with a stick! -- were a sign of largesse. We normally got the little plastic sleeve ice pops, which are neater but a lot cheaper.

My mom always hid the scotch tape. It's weird being an adult and having plenty of tape, even enough that I could give my kids their own rolls.
