The governor just mandated all schools, public and private, be closed from now until at least April 27 (for our county and the ones just north and south of us). Holy fuck. If I were in school this would the greatest gift of all times. All holidays rolled into one. On the other hand, my Mother would have slit her wrists at the announcement. No one hated a snow day worse than sheet did - or any day, really, when we were not in school.

My Twitter feed today is just a list of things that are canceled, postponed or just not happening after all mixed with pleas for people to support restaurants, arts, homeless, Asians... It's wild.

Several restaurants have announced they are going to start offering delivery, take out, drive through. I am 100% in favor of all that and intend to say so with my $. Tonight is Door Dash Thai. I'm trying a new place.

I'm very bummed about the baseball, of course, but I have it so easy compared to most everyone else, it's really hard to justify any whining at all. So I'm going to knit and watch British police on Acorn TV.

The Smalls when Biggie gets on one of his NASCAR runs...

here in AZ the governor made a "medical emergency" announcement, in hopes to ease funds and whatnot for those who are sick.

I wonder what that means for the rest of the year. In summer will the kids just get 2 or 3 weeks off in place of their normal 6 to 8 weeks? They'll have to make up time somewhere if they can't switch them to online learning.

My kids (in SF, CA) just got a 3 week spring break. Included with the official pronouncement was this statement, in bold font: "Students should stay home and minimize social contact as much as possible to keep caregivers and adult family members safe."

Honestly, I'm not sure my children are going to be safe after 3 weeks at home with me, and I'm one of the lucky ones, as we have outdoor spaces we can go and still avoid social contact.

Our provincial government just announced that all publicly funded schools will be closed for two weeks following March break (which starts next week). I hate to agree with anything this government does, but this might just be the right thing to do. That said, I am really glad my team is well ahead in contingency planning an the ability to work from home.

The closing education thing is interesting. I heard something on the BBC World Service last week about strikes in the UK which have been stopping classes in tertiary education, and no doubt that's a mere bagatelle compared to the coronavirus closings which may well follow. In ye olde days tertiary education in the UK was free, and in fact they used to pay students living expenses as well. My mother who did her degree in German got an all expenses paid term or so in Germany too. These days, however, students pay 9,000 pounds a year tuition fees, and although they support the goals of the strikes, they are PISSED about all the expensive education they're missing. Can't blame 'em.
