I'm going out today... in the car! I actually took the car out about a week ago to drive it around the block. But today I'm going to drive to a different part of town to pick up my groceries. Very exciting. I just looked at the order page again and suddenly it dawned on me which QFC I was going to. There are two on Broadway and I had the other one in my mind. OOOPS. almost. The right one is actually the handier of the two so excellent.

For years after plastic bags came in vogue, I saved paper bags just in case. Then I used the plastic bags for all kinds of things and ran out of the paper ones. Then it became shameful in Seattle NOT to use your own bags so I had none.

Now, with deliveries, I'm back to way too many paper bags and I cannot remember what I used to use them for. Well, one thing was to house all the old newspapers before I carried them down to the recycle bin. None of those any more. Actually very little paper of any kind. hmmmm My Mom used to use them under paper towels to drain greasy things after frying. Sure don't do that. I got another one last night and I'm sure I'll come home with more today. Even Biggie can only play with 2 or 3 at a time.

I hope the car starts.

I have a hat that I like but that has always been a bit too tight. I think I have figured out how to fix that. So I'll be doing that today and TV and knitting and whatever else happens along.

We are not allowed to bring our own bags any more. I understand the reasons, but it makes me sad. I still have way too many plastic bags even though I am diligent about not bringing them into the house. I get them from my mom, and my daughter has a fondness for take-out. I haven’t seen paper bags on offer at any store yet. I hoard them for when I shred documents, but that only happens a couple of times a year.

We always ask for paper instead of plastic. We use them to start the woodstove. :)

We get to choose at the commissary on the airbase.

Before we started using our own reusable bags, we always requested paper rather than plastic, not least because they have about four times the capacity (grocery baggers seem to think it's a bad idea to actually fill plastic bags.) Whole Foods switched to all paper some time ago (and anyway I think Cambridge -- or maybe the whole state at this point -- has some restriction on single-use plastic bags).

So now we're getting paper bags again, but they just go straight into the recycling. However, we get a plastic bag around our newspaper every morning, and we're not supposed to put those in regular recycling, so we accumulate them until we remember to take them to the supermarket, which has specula bins for recycling them.
