I did end up cooking this and it was a royal pain in the ass. Too many fiddly parts. Too many dishes dirtied. Too long to wait.

No-Stir Shrimp Scampi Risotto with Spinach & Lemon

But, OMG was it ever delicious. So good. And I have more than half of it left. I'm sure it's going to reheat beautifully.

[livejournal.com profile] lostincandyrain nailed the three things needed to make Dinerly excellent.

1. double all the meat/vegetable/cheese ingredients
2. ignore them whenever they say add sugar
3. have someone who isn't me cook them

My nephew agrees with No.1. He says the meals aren't enough for he and his wife. I find that they are mostly the perfect size for me. I only eat half at a time. I did improve one by adding meat to the second meal. I use pre-chopped garlic and pre-shredded cheese. Life is too short to waste it doing that stuff.

The food is yummy and, really, if they didn't use OnTrac, I might not have canceled - especially after tonight's dinner.

If I had No. 3 on her list, I would for sure be still a customer!

Doesn't it? And even the name/description: Shrimp Risotto with Spinach and Lemon (because you can't have seafood without lemon, right?) YUM!

I read something recently on a US website about the problems services like that have in retaining customers. I was surprised to find that the main reason was that people found they had meal kits piling up as they hadn't got around to using them, faced with the unpleasant fact that they don't cook themselves. In contrast, the reason they lose customers in NZ is because people feel after a while they're now competent enough at cooking not to need them anymore. That's the difference you get when your kits are more than twice the price of the US ones - ain't nobody throwing those out!

I would agree with #1. We tried Hello Fresh and Sparks complained that it wasn't enough food for him, he's "a working man". It was a fun experiment but didn't really work for us. If I'm going to have to go to all the trouble of doubling up on ingredients, then I might as well just look up a recipe online and cook that. The point of Hello Fresh was to not have to go to the grocery and prep a million things.

Chef Michael Symon says that if it takes more than two pots or pans, he won't make it, and that's in his restaurants, too.

We had the same meal in our box! With double the shrimp and spinach, and probably about five times the cheese, (the little cheese thing they gave was SO SMALL,) it was really good. We've always made risotto on the stove, so it was fun realizing you could do it so much more easily in the oven.

I haven't tried it but Freshly seems like it might be more your speed. Heat 'n' eat. :)
