So now Trader Joe's is kicking in on the Get Me Out Of The House conspiracy. I have not been to Trader Joe's since February. I held onto the last Orange Chicken until last week and now it is gone along with everything else TJ's. My TJ shopping list isn't terribly long BUT it is all things that you cannot get anywhere else.

They closed down the closest TJ's last week when the staff got into a big fight with HQ. HQ just said fuck it, store closed. (It's the one near where all the protests are as well as the now famous Seattle encampment.)

But, there's one not too terribly much farther. But no delivery of any kind. They do have old people hours every morning at 8.

Their instagram this morning boasted that for summer this year, they have lemon chess pie. I love lemon chess pie so much. And it is a very rare find - especially in this part of the country.

So, I think maybe, tomorrow at 8, I'll suit up and give it a go. Or maybe I'll wait and go next week. Maybe.

Meanwhile, our COVID numbers here in this county are going up. Not drastically but steadily.

*8,855 people have tested positive, up 58 from yesterday

*576 people have died, up 2 from yesterday

*1,532 people have been hospitalized, up 11 from yesterday

*127,616 people have been tested, up 2,293 from yesterday

One week ago, those totals were 8,536/570/1,499/109,813.

I'm not sure this reflects the protests quite yet. I expect next week's numbers to show those aftereffects.

And, like the rest of the country, the government is allowing more stuff to open up anyway.

I think my neighbors are moving back in. Last June, a year ago, the people above them were doing renovations and they hit a water pipe. Massive damage to their unit forced them to move out. Insurance negotiations stalled the repair at first and then when they were finally making headway, COVID. But, yesterday, I saw they were moving some stuff in. If I liked them better, I'd be glad but they are kind of Mr.and Mrs. Dickhead so I'm only marginally interested.

The unit between mine and theirs was also damaged BUT it's owned by a guy in Arizona who was between tenants and had planned to renovate anyway. They are finishing up in there and yesterday, laid the carpet. Thump thump thump thump all damn day long. I'm dying to see all they've done. The owner promised me a tour when they are finished. He's rather flaky but maybe I'll get a peak.

Same old same old here today. Another day, another square.



Meanwhile, because he knows he's not supposed to, Biggie has sprawled himself over the first square still mounted on the blocking foam. Sigh.

No new stuff is opening up here, in fact more things are closing down.

Besides the old folks' early hour, my TJ's (NYC) tells the over 55's and disabled people to just skip the line, if there is one. But things have calmed down lately. There doesn't seem to be any more panic buying, so there hasn't been a line in weeks. If you bring your own bag, they have you fill it yourself. They've been very diligent about keeping the store sanitized and allowing no more than 25 people inside at once. Aisles that are more narrow have been designated "one way." I can't imagine going more than 3 months with no TJ's. (I've never heard of that pie.)

I wonder if any of the TJs have curbside pickup. I have been wanting a few things from there also, but haven't even driven by there in months.
Corona numbers here are insane. Insane. Over a thousand new cases confirmed just yesterday for my county. Ugh.

no pickup. there are rogue shopping services - postmates, for instance - who will shop there for you but they are pretty pricey and i have not heard good things.

You know what. If you take a pecan pie and remove all the pecans and marry it to an egg custard and add lemon, you'd be way close :)

Massachusetts has started a gradual opening process -- it started less than two weeks ago. So far, all the "indicators" are continuing to show slow declines, but I'm wondering if that will still be true in a week or so, when the opening has been around for a while (and the effects of the protests start to show up).

I have begun to think of the death rates as a reflection of infection rates a month before - but increased hospitalisation is more worrying - and I can't see the protests helping with the infection rate. This might be as good a time as any to go out and buy nice food.

The pie looks interesting - I googled a recipe or two. I saw another person comment that it probably had British origins, and I think it might have originated as a custard tart but, when someone thought it would be lovely to make it lemony, they realised all that juice might curdle it and the custard would split. So they added the flour and cornmeal to stabilise it - and got a really nice texture by doing so.
