The yellow one is signed by the author! The white one is the oldest but not that old. The phone numbers have area codes and the addresses have zip codes.

All three are wonderful. Each has the obligatory jello salad chapter - one quite massive. And the casserole chapter - all quite massive. And the wonderful recipe names: Aunt Bessie's Mistakes (cookies), Dump Salad, Continental Chicken. The white one has ads. The best is for Nunn-Better flour. "There's None Better than NUNN-BETTER"

I love this last one... it calls for 2 cups cornflakes which were, apparently, so ubiquitous that there was no need to even list it in the ingredients.

These are goldmine books. And, yes, I do plan to use some of the recipes!! Can you still buy jello? Outside of liquor stores, I mean.

We have several boxes of jello in our pantry. All strawberry. For days when digestion is not at peak performance.

Indeed you can still buy Jell-O!
Comes in flavors, and if you haven't been buying Jell-O for a while you may find that there have been some additions and, I think but am not certain, a few deletions since the grand old days.

Just from the pages you've shown in this entry, those cookbooks look wonderful! Congratulations on a great score! :^)

Cool!

Those must be fun to read. I am sure there are some tempting recipes there.

Years ago, when I was cleaning out my grandparents house, I came across a similar recipe book put together by a church in my great grandparents' town on Cape Cod. It was dated 1888, and contained recipes from several of my ancestors. I copied it and reprinted it as a Christmas present for my sister and each of my nieces.

Oh, I love church cookbooks. So many recipes containing "oleo" or "butter NOT oleo."

I hope you report on the recipes you try. The cottage cheese pie sounds interesting, but I don't know if I'd be willing to risk a "small box" of cottage cheese.

I love old cookbooks, just for the reading if nothing else. My oldest one is from about 1900. My grandmother brought it with her from Sweden. No covers any more, pages falling out and being tucked back in and certainly things I would NEVER eat voluntarily, but a treasure nevertheless.

Wow! Reminds me of a hilarious thread I came across on Twitter filled with all the American recipe things that baffle us Commonwealthers. Like putting in cans of soup, Jello and Cool Whip. Oh yes, and garlic and onion powders! The NZ equivalent of your old cookbook recipes would be truly ghastly versions of foods from other cultures.

I rather like the idea of potatoes in sour cream and cheese, topped with cornflakes.... I'm not sure about cheese soup though!

I would try all of these! But I'd have to figure out what a "small box of cottage cheese" was first...
