Salad fail

I'm not a huge salad lover. I'm not a huge plant based food lover. But I try. And once in a while, I get a real jones for a good big salad like a club salad. I usually just get one of those pre chopped deals that you just toss everthing into the bowl and add croutons or other stuff. For some reason I decided to buy lettuce and free lance.

Today for lunch I made a giant salad that even included a piece of my finger. Ouch. The salad was horrible. Too much dressing and too much stuff. So I threw it out and started again. Still horrible. Ugh.

I give up. The other day I made up some nut/olive spread - chopped up Trader Joe's Olive and Herb mixed nuts with some black olives and some peperoncini mixed in a combo of cream cheese/sour cream and mayo. It is good shit and... now that I think about it, is plant based! So I had some of that on crackers.

Now I have a mess in my clean kitchen.

The housecleaner got here on time (not always the case). The house looks great except for the mess I made in the kitchen. I found a couple of excellent things at Goodwill and Uwajimaya did, of course, have Spam! and apples.

So assuming I did not also collect a case of Covid-19, the morning was a success.

The Mariners play their last intersquad game tonight and it will be broadcast on TV. They travel on Thursday and play their first game in Houston on Friday.

This afternoon I need to reclean the kitchen and put my other stuff away. And then maybe some crochet and TV.

Speaking of the Mariners, I heard on the BBC World Service yesterday that US peanut growers that sell them in-shell for baseball games are really struggling this year. Maybe fans should eat them in front of the TV. It was interesting to discover that there are foods traditionally associated with US sports.

I find that I like salads of any kind better when someone else makes them. Homemade salads are never as good as I hope they will be, although I do eat them. And also, what sort of magic is stirred into a house ranch dressing from a restaurant? It's just so good.

I enjoy salads when I eat out but they're never any good when I make them myself. Even if they're OK, they're never anywhere near as good. My grandma when I was growing up said the secret to a tasty salad is adding salt and pepper but it never seemed to make much difference to me. My current way of trying to get more veggies into my diet is making fruity smoothies in the morning and adding carrots and spinach to them.

I'm also on Team Somebody Else Has to Make the Salad. I hate making my own salad, and they're not as good when I make them.

I seem to be an outlier in this particular sample: I like making my own salad, and I like eating the result. I've been really annoyed that some critter or critters have decimated our home-grown lettuce, but I have been adding home-grown arugula to commercial lettuce, and we generally include some combination of tomatoes, bell peppers, and mushrooms (still waiting for our very large umber of green cherry tomatoes to ripen). It helps to be able to use fresh-cut home-grown herbs in the dressing.

I don't make salads very much, and i think it's because i don't like making uncooked greens. They are annoying to prepare and awkward to eat. I usually find just tomatoes, carrots, celery and cucumber is a good enough base, super easy to wash and dice. Then you can add seeds or nuts or whatever other things you like. Although, that said, i'm usually too lazy to even go that far and just leave all the veges as sticks so i can eat them with my hands and dip them in peanut butter or sauce or whatever.
