Oh Canada

My outloud thoughts on Canadian Thanksgiving were in no way meant to dis Canada. Except for the fact that you can't get a rare hamburger, or even medium rare, there, I do love Canada. A lot. I'm sorry they have such shitty neighbors but I admire their mostly graceful attitude about it. Vancouver and Toronto are two of my favorite cities ever. And, part of the reason I love each of them is the kindness and generosity of the people I've run into there. So their weird, to me, Thanksgiving aside, Canada rocks. Except for that hamburger situation.

I have only very peripherally kept an eye on the baseball playoffs. And last night that eye caught the glorious victory of the Rays which knocked the Yankees out of the playoffs. It was truly sweet. The Rays next face the team I'd most like to see crushed into tiny baseball pieces - the Astros. I have no means of watching any of the games assuming my MLB.TV subscription continues its playoff blackouts, so I'll just hope for good victories. If the Rays do prevail, I might have to just revive my baseballness for this year's World Series.

Nothing planned for today. I considered, briefly, making a grocery run but then I re-evaluated and realized with proper planning, I could hang on til Wednesday when the house cleaner comes. As long as I have to be out anyway... One trip out into the virus world is way better than two. So, I'll stay here and watch the wind try to get the leaves off the trees.

I hope the wind takes care of the tree you hate today. Nothing like being able to spy on your neighbors!

On my last trip to Canada, which was a few years ago now, I was impressed with their credit card philosophy. In a restaurant the server hands you the swiper/chip machine, so that at no time does your card get handled by anyone but you. It's hard to get used to coming back to the US where the server disappears with your card and does who-knows-what with it.

I lived in Montreal for five years (did my BA there then took french) - I just love the place, and miss it like crazy! Also love Toronto and would love one day to discover Vancouver.

Ever since I read that food poisoning is more likely in minced [ground] meat I've avoided rare burgers, but not without sulking and pouting.

We too were thrilled about the Rays' defeat of the Hated Yankees (that's their proper name, at least hereabouts). And because TBS is part of our slightly-more-than-basic cable package, we were able to watch it.

And yes, I want them to crush Houston. Not just because of the Houston shenanigans of recent years, but because a team that was sub-.500 in the regular season has no business in the playoffs to begin with.

I don't know who I want to win between the Braves and the Dodgers. In theory, as a one-time Brooklyn Dodgers fan, I should hate the Los Angeles Dodgers forever (not to mention their now owning the guy who should have been the face of the Red Sox franchise for the next 15 years), but somehow I don't, really. Back in the '90s, I really liked the Braves – perhaps because in those days, they were the only non-local team we could watch on a regular basis – but I've kind of soured on them, and more so on their obnoxious fans.

Anyway, the Rays have never won a World Series (granted, their history is but an eye-blink in the larger scheme of things), so there's that. And none of the games will be played in that horrible place they call a ballpark.
