Last Summer when I got to swim for a month, I noticed that the mask I put on after my swim hid most of the marks that the goggles left on my face. Nice. And, I have enjoyed making rude faces at people right in front of them when they can't tell.

But, [livejournal.com profile] mrdreamjeans added way more good things to the upside list in his entry this morning:

Things I like about wearing a mask:
1. In Minnesota's bitter cold weather, the mask will warm the face ...
2. I don't have to shave every day ...
3. Some of the masks cover a chin ... or two ...
4. I'm having fun mixing and matching them for work, using them as accessories ...
5. I don't have to worry about bad breath ...
6. If I mutter something unkind, most people won't hear what I said ...
7. I especially like the feeling I am being considerate of others ...

Those anti-mask people can waste their money on lipstick all they want...

I have a bunch that I do try to coordinate with whatever I'm wearing that day. If I have to wear it, might as well enjoy it.

I pop a breath mint before I wear it though, because others can't smell my breath, but I can :P

5. I don't have to worry about bad breath

No, this one's a problem, because now I can smell my own breath. :P

Imagine how much a ventilator will mess up one's lipstick. They never think of that, do they?

I like being able to mutter to myself without worrying that there might be nosy lip readers about.

There is also a very important part that enters the equation in these months: Wearing a mask while outside warms the air we inspire and also humidifies it. Which is an essential part to avoid respiratory infections of any kind, since they are favoured by dried out, cooled down airways.

Hee hee. I have noticed some of those benefits myself. I enjoy making fancy masks. I have yet to put one on to take out the trash, but that day may come as the weather gets colder.

What others have said about the bad breath thing -- I can smell my breath and so always make sure I brush my teeth and use mouthwash before I have to put on a mask. Also, I'm not sure about how they're going to be when it gets really cold. Your breath will cause moisture on the inside, which will start to freeze up. I can't stand to have scarves wrapped around my face in the winter because frost starts to build on them due to me breathing, and that feels really wet and unpleasant (and cold) against the skin. Can't imagine masks will be any different, possibly worse, because they'll be pressed right up against your face. Not looking forward to much colder weather at all.

I noticed the face-warming feature this past Saturday morning when we were out early with the grandsons.

And a friend told us she likes wearing a mask when she's grocery shopping because nobody can see that she is snarling at people.

I can lip synch to songs I like on my iPod without having to worry about people thinking I'm a damn weirdo.
I'm not great looking so any excuse to cover up part of my face will do.
