Weird Reality
Nov. 28th, 2020 10:00 amSince I'm the only one here and I'm not going anywhere and I watch mostly recorded or streamed TV. Do laundry, knit/crochet. Normal, regular, every day stuff. I can go hours without even being aware of the pandemic. I do not know anyone who has gotten the virus. And yet, it still defines my every day. It's just weird. Pretty soon we will not even be able to say 'this time last year' and mean pre-pandemic. That's pretty amazing.
Fitbit and I agree that I slept great last night. Today is laundry day. Also I'll be finishing up my current novel tonight so I need to find the next one. But, otherwise, Undoing, Roadkill, The Crown, and maybe a movie. And my crochet hook.
Oh and I need to sort out my drugs. I want to avoid refilling any prescriptions until after January 1 because I'm in the annual insurance gap right now and January 1 I'll at least be working on the deductible. I need to figure out what I have left and if it will stretch. I'm good on the inhaler which is the ohsoverypricey one but I'm not sure about the rest.
Biggie's on his perch looking for his sweetheart. Sweetheart's household sleeps late and does not raise the blinds until mid morning. So Biggie just sits and waits.
If I understand correctly, Advent starts tomorrow. I am on day 2 of jelly so not that far ahead. I don't slather my toast with it so one of those little jars last me about three breakfasts. So really, I'm already behind. There's some pressure. But, the fact that I never really understood and so can completely ignore the Elf on the Shelf, helps.

Date: 2020-11-28 07:03 pm (UTC)The virus is really a life changer. Many people compare it to Spanish Flu. Months ago, I got to thinking that it lasted about 4 years. So if I just got into this pandemic with the idea that it will last 4 years, then perhaps I won't be nearly as shocked and bothered as some people by how long and wearing it is going to be, and I'll come out the other end feeling happy. So far, so good. My personal opinion is that we are one year in....I think it was here months before anyone knew or wanted to admit to knowing.

Date: 2020-11-28 07:30 pm (UTC)You can start a jar every day. There's no rule that says you have to finish a jar before using the rest...or is there?

Date: 2020-11-28 11:37 pm (UTC)Life for us basically normal (because New Zealand has its borders closed and there are currently no cases in the community). I am watching the case numbers rise in Europe & North America and it fills me with dread.

Date: 2020-11-29 01:28 am (UTC)- We are an island nation so it's easier to close our borders.
- We got our first case later (and could already see the carnage it was causing in Italy) so already knew to take it seriously.
- We have great leadership in Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield & Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. But even that was due to luck. Last election, Jacinda Ardern's party did not get enough votes, the National Party (our version of the Republicans) got more. But neither had enough to form a government. Both needed the votes from the New Zealand First Party. Lucky for us National had got Winston Peters (leader of NZ First) so pissed that he decided to form the next government with Jacinda Ardern's party.
The National Party could so easily have been in power when COVID hit and could so easily have decided to keep the borders open & try to keep the economy open too. New Zealand's COVID outcome would have been a very different story.

Date: 2020-11-29 03:48 am (UTC)And this blows my mind, as between P. and I we know 8 people who are dear friends - or family of the same - who've had it, 5 of whom have died.

Date: 2020-11-29 07:51 pm (UTC)Three of those cases were in one family: my friend was feverish and coughing, but it resolved within a week; her stepson was very ill but skipped hospitalization and thus far *knocks wood* has no lingering effects, and her father died on a ventilator in hospital. To add to the "2020 stinks on ice" theme, the family home was caught in the California wildfires and had to be gutted to the studs - they wound up selling, as the land was worth quite a bit and no one had the heart to try and rebuild.
