Music

I am not a music person. I rarely ever even have music playing. There are, however, lots of songs in my head. If you had a Name That Tune of songs between 1952 and 1969, I'd be the GOAT. Seriously. Need all the lyrics to Lipstick on your Collar? Or White Rabbit? Here, let me sing 'em for you. Sorry about the being tone deaf thing. But, about 1970-ish, I quit listening. No reason. Just stopped.

I'm kind of familiar with bits of the past - Abba and Queen - and some of the present - Brandy Clark. I like the sound of classical music but don't know much about it at all. Mainly, I'm a music dud.

When I was swimming, I listened to music every day - for the entire hour I was in the pool. I enjoyed it enormously. But, when swimming ended, so did the music. Yesterday, I thought it would be fun to maybe listen to music while I was in the shower. I have Google You Tube Music because of ad free You Tube, so I trotted it out. I dug out my Google Home pod thing and plugged it into the bathroom socket. There will be music there this morning. Probably it will be Christmas music because someone on my LJ friends list this morning entitled his entry "Bring a torch, Jeanette Isabella, Bring a torch, come swiftly and run"

Now that is stuck in my head.

As planned, I baked yesterday's breakfast casserole while I treadmilled this morning. It looked promising.

But, it wasn't fabulous. I don't think I like the taste of canned crescent rolls. There is a chance that it might be better reheated. So I'll divvy it into servings and try it before I toss out the rest.

I may have to open the door to my hallway today ... I have two packages scheduled for delivery. It's USPS so they will be left downstairs and I'll have to go get them.

oops I was in the middle of this entry and decided to change the watch face on my Fitbit. That was a rabbit hole. But now I have a snow man - I had to pick out his outfit etc so it was complicated.

Then I got into the shower with music. I need a better playlist(s) but the concept works.

I could stand to do some laundry but also could slide by a day or two or three.

And in between all that excitement, I'll be working on this...

"Jeanette Isabella" sounds like one of those awkward double names they used to give cabbage patch dolls.

In English, it does. *nod, nod*

But when you hear this Christmas carol in its original French, the name is lovely and unobtrusive.

My impression has always been that Jeanette and Isabella are two different people (I think that in the version that was in my 9th-grade French textbook – which might well be the first place I encountered it – that line had a comma after "Jeanette").

We first encountered this French carol in fifth or sixth grade, when we were ten or eleven. (Our school district was firm in its belief that we'd learn more of a language and that we'd learn it better and more quickly and thoroughly if we started learning it earlier, and three languages were assigned variously to the ten elementary schools in that district; my school was assigned French. I don't know that the district administrators were correct.)
Because our teacher herself was so memorable, I have a clear recollection that what she presented to us was that this was one name. If she'd thought it was two people----which isn't to say it's not---she'd have said so and would have told us energetically and enthusiastically to ignore the fact that there was no "and" between the two and for that matter, that there was no comma between the two in the lyrics she wrote on the blackboard and instructed us to copy into our cahiers.
This isn't to say she was right, only that her lessons were difficult to forget because she was, ah...impressive to our impressionable young minds.

Where you do get a string of names, also being urged to hurry and come to the stable is in The Shepherds' Chorus from Amahl and the Night Visitors.

I've got a playlist of 321 songs (about 23 hours) but it is on Spotify so useless to you. You would know and like 90% as my forte is also pre-1975 when I graduated from college and most of the Pink Floyd stuff I listen to doesn't work well on a play list. But it is fun to hit random and get on the bike. Never know what I'll get but I know I'll like it. When I hear or think of something I want to have on the list I'll add it asap so it just keeps growing.

Oh, yeah, and I keep trying the roll o' croissants thinking that they might be good. About once a year. They always suck.

I don't love those in general because I know what a real croissant can be, but this summer a friend's baking challenge featured a sinful dark-chocolate-and-cinnamon treat that started with canned croissant dough. Came out GREAT, and I'm totally willing to think of canned croissants as just as an ingredient from now on.

As for the music, I often have the radio going while I'm in the shower or working, but never really got in the habit of using music on shuffle from my (huge!) collection. It's partly because my collection is so varied that hopping from a '90s grunge track to a random song from the middle of a Broadway musical to some Harry Chapin would drive me up the wall.

Susan, were you ever into Blondie? I never expected to utter this phrase, but I absolutely love Miley Cyrus's new cover of "Heart of Glass.:

Your breakfast casserole looks very much like a breakfast "strata" my sister used to make and serve on Christmas morning. I recall it contained bread sliced (torn into pieces), eggs, milk, uncooked pre-packaged hash brown potatoes, and cheese. I'm sure it could also accommodate bacon, if you should wish to add bacon.
I'd send you to a recipe, but she never shared hers and I've never had occasion to make and serve this dish. Seemed easy enough to do, though.
Oh, and she'd make it up on Christmas Eve afternoon or early evening, stick it in the fridge, and then bake it the following morning. I'm assuming she allowed the casserole and the dish to come to room temperature before shoving it all into the oven.

My opinion of it was, it was good, even quite tasty, but it wasn't anything I got excited about and that might have been because it doesn't seem holiday-festive-like to me.

Too bad it wasn't tasty. Hopefully it'll be good reheated.

Maybe both reheated and supplemented with red-eye gravy or sausage gravy or extra melted cheese or lots of pepper or...

If you get a song stuck in your head, you can always try to use a worse song to dislodge it.
