I just got these two faces in email.
I sometimes (it used to be often but, happily now just "sometimes") get tweets or emails warning me that my email address is public or my webcam is public - warning about how dangerous it is to expose myself. I've never found the danger and have always kind of been insulted that these people think I'm not smart enough to have thought all this through.
I have, in fact, reaped rewards for having my addresses - virtual and real available and the rest. For instance...
In 2014, I got a delightful email from a woman in Hungary. She had found my webcam and my journal and had been following both for about a year. It was the most lovely note. She had just finished school and was working as a programmer. It was a lovely email to get.
Then she sent me a Christmas card. From Hungary. Beautiful handwriting and pretty stamp and a lovely card. More cards every year. Her name changed and I even missed it the first time but she had gotten married.
This year there was no card but before I could worry, I got an email with a picture of her brand new, just out of the oven, twins. Bence and Ábel - born September 30. I begged for more pictures and more arrived this morning. Are they not the cutest things ever???
I kind of understand why everyone wants to protect their privacy (in fact, I hope their Mom is ok with this entry). I kind of understand it. But it's not for me. I'd rather have two new Hungarian buddies. Thank you, internet!
EDIT. Ok, so in retrospect this was a little judgy. Privacy is a weird thing. Protection of it is a fierce thing for most people. My public-ness impinges on no one. I live on the 4th floor of a secured building. Yes there are ways people can get to me. But why in hell would they even want to? I'm a fat old lady with nothing anyone would want. I can well afford to take privacy risks. I need to keep my mitts off of anyone else's decisions.
