I'm involved in a study out of Stanford University. They are paying me to take screenshots of my phone every 5 minutes or so and they send me quick little surveys to fill out about 3 times a day. They want to know what I'm doing and who I'm doing it with. Eating, watching TV, reading at home... doing it with nobody. I've been doing this now for about a week. I figure they were hoping for someone who does more in more places with actual live people. They better not dock my pay for being boring.

I whipped up a new hairdo last night.

I think I'll make a variation today - a bit bigger and slouchier. You know, like the cool kids.

I did all the laundry yesterday so today I am chore free. Except, the kitchen needs apres breakfast tidy up. And speaking of which, I found a new Dawn product that now has my dish washing fancy. It's the Dawn foam. A walnut sized dollop of foam does a sink worth of dishes quite nicely. I'm impressed. I still use the Power Wash spray for greasy messes but this foam thing is cool.

I just read this great quote in a NYT piece. Biden chides aides for what he deems overly academic or elitist language. “Pick up your phone, call your mother, read her what you just told me,” he likes to say. “If she understands, we can keep talking.”

Much of my IBM career was helping executives explain stuff. To employees, to press, to customers, to public. I spent my days with engineers and programmers trying to understand it myself. I often asked them "how would you explain that to your mother." It always got me the goods.

I am wary of liking Biden simply because he isn't Donald Trump so these little nuggets of stuff to like him anyway, help. Trump is still wielding power as long as Biden's value is only that he's Anybody But Trump.

One very dear friend of mine just isn't that good at explaining, and I'll ask him to break it down and explain it to me as if I were his three-year -old niece. That usually does it, but not always. And in his case, I wouldn't dare ask him how he'd explain it to his mother.

And I've been wary of every incoming president since I was old enough to have been made aware (and the grown-ups in my life saw to it that I was indeed made aware) that there was another, major political party, that the whole nation wasn't "us."
I agree, though: the mere fact that this man isn't his predecessor isn't enough to make him a good guy or a good, let alone a great Chief Executive.
Time will tell.

I’m excited about that new Dawn! Thanks for the reminder. I hope I find it today. In my head, I spray the dishes w/ it, come back later & rinse. Maybe that’s a different one, saw it in a commercial last night.

Ooh... and that’s what I was afraid of, that it’d be too strong, kind of like oven cleaner. But it still beats doing the dishes. I’m trying it.

I would have been happy if Biggie had been elected, he would still be better than Trump

It sounds like Biden is trying to avoid sounding too much like Obama. Obama was a very bright man, but he couldn't get through to the blue collar guy because he was over their head. And it gives Democrats the feel of playing to elites. I think Biden is trying to avoid that perception. He's trying to be every man's president. It's a very wise move.

I like your hat!!! Very cool.

Do you have a way to get your phone to automatically take those frequent screen shots or do you have to remember to do it yourself? Surely it's automatic, but I didn't even know that was a possibility! Techie I am not.

I have a lot of tech skills, but I have one that's extremely rare. I can explain things to users. My current company is really bad about embracing the latest buzz words that make them sound super-brilliant. That always puts me on edge. People who talk that way are trying to make up for the lack of actual skills, I've found.

Emergent issue == production blow-up that need immediate action
Continuous deployment == put the new feature in production when it's ready instead of waiting until the sprint ends
DevOps == getting the job done even if it means putting on a sysadmin or dba hat.
etc

I feel people who speak like that are trying to impress and intimidate non-tech people. That really bothers me. If not for the users, why would I be here?

Anyway, yes, I like Biden's philosophy.

Not sure how well that would go over with my mother, she tends to talk in weird anachronisms that sound like the bible ("weep" instead of "cry", that sort of thing)

We've been using the regular Dawn foamer pumps since July, the smell is awakening to say the least.
But I am glad we finally got the dishwasher replaced,. (and so are my poor chapped dry hands)
I still like the orange, green apple & classic condensed blue variants of dawn.
(the platinum standard gel gives me a rash.)

The standard of an explanation that you'd give to your mother is an excellent rule-of-tongue. I like it.

I agree that Joe Biden needs to do more than just be Not-Trump. But I do approve of that status as a starting point......

I didn't know Biden said that, very cool. (I followed you ages ago when I was here, about 2011-2017 so I started following you again, hope that's ok.)

Love your beanie/kufi. Perfect Susan colors.

Not a fan of Biden or Harris.......but would have voted for a turnip against Trump. I do believe things will be accomplished, if only in baby steps. Sometimes just a change of scenery is a good place to start.
