My favorite breakfast these days is one egg done in my little griddle, over a half dozen tatertots crisped in my little waffle iron with two pieces of bacon. I also love adding 1/8th of an avocado, when I have one ready to eat.

That last bit is the problem. When I buy them from Amazon Fresh, they take about a week to ripen and then they are perfect. So Planning is needed. I bought two from Uwajimaya last week. It was really hard to find two that were timed right. I finally found one that was about a day away from good and one that was a few days away from good. Not perfect. But doable.

I'm not sure why someone has not invented calendar avocados. I'll take a Monday and a Thursday, please. Oh and can I have a Week from Tuesday as well? Find me a more first world problem...

I dreamed last night that my ex husband gave me a diamond and asked me to marry him. Not a ring, by the way, but a diamond. And then we looked out the window and saw a pig flying. This cracked me up while I was still dreaming AND when I woke up. What a great dream. (FYI he's been dead for several years and did not have the kind of humor sense that would have found this funny. I did say ex. And we bought a house instead of any diamonds.)

Today's plans include finishing off the robe I started yesterday and doing it without the body pains of yesterday.

And that's about it. Not a football fan so I'm not making any 7 layer dip OR bemoaning the party I cannot have. Two very good reasons for not being a football fan, I think.

M'mmm....I do love me a nice avocado!

And last weekend I found one at a WalMart Superstore, of all places, which was bigger than any mango I've ever seen or handled.
Held it for a few days to allow it to ripen, and when I cut into it I was amazed at its perfection.
Normally, I'd eat a Haas avocado "all gone" in one sitting, but this one, I split into two portions, ate one, put lemon juice all over the cut surface of the other, and wrapped that half in cling film and popped it into the fridge.

I do believe I'm going to go and eat it, right now.

We actually asked how to get ripe avocados at the store and the produce guy basically said "If you find a ripe one, give it to us so we can toss it!" I guess if they sell them ripe, they will nearly certainly be bad before people can use them

Indeed. We rarely buy avocados (I don't know why not), but we buy pears regularly, and it would be insane for a store to sell already-ripe pears; however, it can be tricky to judge how long a pear is going to take to ripen, and it's not always clear when they have. (I have never known an Anjou pear to get properly ripe, so we've stopped buying them. Bartletts are our first choice, but they're sometimes not available, as was the case this week when [livejournal.com profile] jwg got Boscs instead, which are a little more challenging.)

At my local grocery they actually sell nets with 5 very small avocados that truly ripen one day after the other. Exactly big enough for my breakfast. I love them!

I lol'ed when I read about your 1/8 avocado! You are so restrained! We have a great climate in NZ for avocado growing and avocados are a MAJOR thing here, to the extent that if there's a short growing season we refer to it as an avopocalypse. I get a delivery box of 20 every 4 weeks. Re the very small avocado thing, just bear in mind that the stones mostly aren't proportional, so the smaller the avo, the more stone you get as a proportion of the whole thing.

A good trick to get avocados to ripen up is put them in a paper bag with an apple and seal it up.

Here in Maine, purchasing Bartlett pears is an investment in the future. 🙄

I *LOVE* avocados... But they are SO expensive...

We can easily pay about AUD$3.50 for one (which would be about US$2.70!). Funnily enough, seeing misconducts comment below... we do get quite a lot of our avocados from New Zealand.

But don't you have a local grocery store that stocks them...? Where you can pick one up as needed?

My absolute favourite is toast, smothered with butter, a bit of Vegemite, and then some smashed avo on top... Maybe a side of bacon as well...!
