Mike Hall is a vendor for Real Change - a local weekly newspaper known as the homeless paper. For years I used to pass him all the time and buy my copy of the paper from him. We never swapped substantial info - just 'hi' and 'nice day' and stuff. But somewhere along the way he learned my name and that I drove a green Smart Car. For a while I used to pass him walking to work as I was coming back from swimming. His wave was always such a great morning gift.
He had one corner that used to be very busy. It was the corner of a great and large bookstore. Then they moved out and he stayed. The space grew quiet and he stayed. And then the pandemic hit and he, like everyone else, was gone. I've thought about him whenever I pass his corner. I think I assumed I'd never see him again.
This morning I popped out to Trader Joes and on the way home, just one block up from his old spot, there was Mike waving at me!!!! What a great sight to see.
