My kitchen sink has not been draining well recently. Finally today I did a big kitchen clean up and decided it was time to investigate. Ugh. Food down there. It was spinning around just fine but there was a small amount of food that was not going anywhere.

I cleaned all the bits. I did the soda/vinegar thing so at least the food that was still there was nice and clean. I ground up some ice. Finally I figured out the blade thingies were stuck. Locked in place. I tried poking. No joy. I googled. Lots of answers. Grind bones, grind fruit pits. I got no bones, no pits.

[livejournal.com profile] bill_schubert will be here in nearly a month. Maybe he'd like to fix it? I'm sure he would.

I chewed on it for a while and googled some more and then dug out a long spoon that was headed to Goodwill and was nice and stiff and pushed and pulled and pushed and pulled and BINGO, Both of the blades gave up and started spinning around!! I thanked them profusely. Sooooo satisfying.

My sweater got to the point I could try it on. It's a great sweater! I need about 4" on the sweater bottom and 4" or less on the sleeves. Also satisfying.

Also I had another thought about Biggie. His biting these days happens almost only when I'm on the couch. And he rarely crawls in my lap there any more. Every morning, after I get my coffee, I sit down and clip his nails. Only one. And then he gets a treat. He loves the treats. He hates the clipping. But we do it every morning. Here on the couch where he bites me.

So. No more morning nail clipping. Tomorrow, I'll give him the treat but no clipping. I'll figure out how to get his nails trimmed later.

Today he's been pretty chill. He's been in his tree. He's been playing with his roller toy a lot. He took his pill without argument. Now he's napping.

The Mariner game is tortuously slow. Both teams are playing horrible baseball. Good garbage disposal fixing background noise.

So glad that even thinking of me fixes things.

I suspect that there is a hex socket under the disposal and yours came with a large Allen Wrench to turn it when this happens. If that is the case we'll get the size and either be sure you have one or buy one to match it. Soooo much easier.

Good job on your own though.

Well, that's unusual. But yeah, the blades kind of swing around so they got stuck. Glad you fixed it.

Ok, I now know more about disposals than ever before. You did the thing. Pretty much the only thing other than ribs and such that would work. Great video here (https://youtu.be/UKRkVQCYSmU) and here (https://youtu.be/Y5X-6t2aHIc)that shows it. The only other choice, other than what you did to fix it, is to replace the whole thing.

YES! We must kick technologies ass!

Or at least beat it into an uneasy truce.

Maybe try doing the mail clipping in a different place every day? Hopefully then Biggie will disassociate the nail clippings with the couch.

Or he'll learn to associate every place with nail clipping and will bite at any time in any location in the house.

Re: Biggie, nail clipping and biting.
I think you might have hit it.

Our little tortie will tolerate nail clipping IF we're brisk and business-like about it. She'll have an endpoint in mind---I'm not sure how it's determined---and if I'm adept and adroit and get all the nails except the dewclaws done in that amount of time, all's good. Otherwise, dewclaws might be deferred until the next regular trimming, or might be done in a separate session the next day.
Otherwise, if I can't beat the clock, the rest of the nails including the dewclaws get done the following day.

The big male, on the other hand, barely tolerates any nail-clipping at all, has to be wrapped reasonably snugly in a bath towel and set on his butt with his spine against my midsection, one paw at a time exposed so I can get at the nails, and even then he'll try to bite. If the biting behavior gets very bad, I'll pinch the skin on the back of his neck with my teeth. Someone abused this poor animal, though, and if I don't miss my guess his feet were injured (caught in a door, or stepped on, possibly intentionally) and he's terrified of having his feet messed with.

Getting it done in one session ( or two, if necessary) allows both cats to enjoy the next however many days "off." And me, too.

I’m with Mhairi Dubh. Both my girls hate the clipping, and came to me too old to be trained to tolerate it. I wrap them like a burrito and do as much as I can (I can usually get both front paws done in a single go), and then leave them alone for as long as possible. They don’t love it, but they don’t run away from the towel.

Great job fixing the disposal! I love it when an outside the box solution fixes the issue! I do wonder if the biting is related to the nails. Interesting!
