cake day

I think today I'm going to make a cake. I want to take another stab at plain white cake. I found an icing I want to try but it calls for Crisco and I am without so I will try the next on the 'want to try list'.

OR maybe I'll use this as an excuse to go to the other Whole Foods and see if they have the fresh squeezed orange juice. Actually, that's a better plan.

I got out my small but satisfying collection of spiral bound church cookbooks and perused the cake and cookie sections and found some really good ideas. I used up a lot of post its marking my favorites. There is at least one in all five books!

I slept long last night. At one point Biggie left and I readjusted and went back to sleep and then he came back. My arm was out of the covers and he carefully sniffed from my hand to my shoulder. I was expecting a bite but he just sniffed and then curled up next to it. I love hearing his little snores.

Yesterday I was thinking about pill giving options and he loves butter and Temptations so I thought I'd coat the pill with butter and use that to glue it to a Temptation. Only this morning I forgot the butter part and used cheese to do the same thing. Worked perfectly. Biggie is encouraging my creativity in the kitchen.

There are no COVID numbers collected on the weekends. Virus vacation. There is concern that so many state employees are quitting rather than get vaccinated as required now by law. Schools are having a hard time finding employees because of the same reason. I am not moved. Honestly, I do not want my state administered by people who are too stupid to get the vaccine. And while my dog in the school hunt is not even a personal one, I don't think school children should be surrounded by idiots either. There is no reason to not get the vaccine if you want to live in a society of other people. If you want to live in a cabin in the woods and never ever encounter another human, okdokey. Otherwise, shoot up. I am so grateful to live in a state with the balls to make these mandates. I would like them stronger but I'm happy with what we have.

Oh! I see yellow leaves on The Tree That I Hate. More than a couple!!!! Happy days!

The ballgame is at 1 so I need to get going. I need to get showered and dressed before I leave. Seems like the kind thing to do.

That does surprise me that people would leave jobs rather than get vaccinated. These are strange times we live in.

Those church cookbooks are the best. Do you find them at Goodwill?

I have a copy from my grandma's Lutheran church from the 1970s. One of the church members was the most in-demand caterer in town. Mabel donated several recipes and I've made them and she was spot-on. I love her German potato salad recipe. You start by frying one pound of bacon, then keep the fat for the dressing.

I love my church cookbooks. But the one that is truly near and dear to me is the one cookbook my Mother used as her cooking bible……The Settlement Cookbook. She had a first edition that she still uses and I had to go hunting used bookshops fo my own, but I love that thing. I remember when I was about 9 or 10 and got interested in baking cookies and all sorts of treats. The two very quick recipes I loved were the sugar cookies and a plain pie crust that I would cut into strips and put sugar and cinnamon on top.

There were times when I wanted to make one or the other and my Mother would say no, there wasn’t time. She would head downstairs to do laundry…and since I had the recipes memorized, it took all of about three minutes to mix the ingredients and then another few to pop in the oven. By the time she came upstairs they were in the oven for several minutes. The bowls etc were washed and put back and I was innocently sitting at the table waiting for the timer to ding. Who says ther’s no time, if you know how to work the system. 😁

Good to hear about your vaccine mandates. Despite the fact that we're still doing Covid elimination, the government has been very hesitant to require vaccines, because they want to seem nice. Even frontline border workers have had months and months to get vaccinated and the shit, ie what to do when people refuse, *still* hasn't fully hit the fan. Nuts.

They're leaving in droves rather than get the vaccine? Sigh

Oh, it gets worse! This is one of the busiest weekends for the Washington state ferry system and a bunch of crew members are staging a sick-out over the mandate. The ferries on my route are running half an hour behind schedule, and the Seattle/Bremerton route is being reduced to one boat because of staffing issues.

All it's going to take is one ambulance from the island to Harborview delayed because of this for people to be howling for blood. I drove around today to give my son his birthday presents and that was the fastest route because of the delays at Colman Dock. This is not sustainable.

O.M.G. The lack of caring about anyone else there is disheartening.
