After sitting one way (with both feet folded under me or just one on the couch), my body, from my head to toes one day just screamed NO! The horrible pain only lasted about 12 hours but clearly sitting that way was no longer an option. (I can once again sit cross legged on the bed at night for about an hour while I play games and listen to my book but an hour is all I get.)

So I rearranged my living room and started sitting in a proper chair with my feet on the floor. My feet proceeded to balloon into fat sausages. Some of this may be that it's still hot but I'm guessing most of it is just having them on the floor. Dr. Google says that this is non-pitting edema and no big deal. Dr. Google does not, apparently, take into account the expense of my having to buy bigger shoes.

Plus, it's not that comfortable. Probably it is the chair.

I need something that is comfortable enough to sit up and use the computer and also lean back, put my feet up and watch TV while I knit and crochet. Yes, I could move my ass and compute in one place and knit in another but I don't wanna.

A recliner seems like an idea but they are all so huge. And weirdly different. Plus, I really don't want leather or pleather. I want fabric that isn't ugly. And I need the foot rest to come out when I am sitting up and not just when I'm sitting back. And I don't want to wait for freakin' ever.

[livejournal.com profile] fflo got this one a while back and I've thought about it many times. I think maybe I might have to let go of the fabric and my love of bright colors. It's just so huge.

And I keep trolling Amazon for options. And not finding the perfect one. arugh.

I have another chair. I might switch out the two and try it for a while but I'm not hopeful.

Today's plans include baseball and well, really that's it. I have a couple of small chores but not that much. I'd like to get my temperature blanket caught up to at least August. I'm mid-July now (one square a day).

I think now, I'll get another cup of coffee and look at Amazon recliners some more.

La-Z-Boy has options that do not look like recliners and are actually quite comfortable. This one looks like it could fit in your living room in the right covering: https://www.la-z-boy.com/p/high-leg/scarlett-high-leg-reclining-chair/_/R-028431

That is so difficult a problem. We solved it with some very expensive chairs that will outlive us but they are not perfect. Having made the decision now, though, they are permanent.

I think that is a good plan. Find out some other things you don't like to zero in on what you do.

We have two of these from LazyBoy

https://www.la-z-boy.com/p/recliners/vail-rocking-recliner/_/R-010403

They do come w/o a rocking option.
but ... the supply and demand issue is huge right now for a lot of furniture.
Hope you find something. I HATE shopping for furniture.

There's a mission-style recliner I sat in at a La-Z-Boy store not too long ago. It was surprisingly comfy, and the footprint isn't real bit.

Good luck with your recliner/foot rest search. I love my LaZBoy swivel/rocker/recliner. You have to recline at least one notch to get the footrest up, but that is still pretty upright — but not upright enough for computer work, I don't think. Perfect for watching TV or reading, though.

I have to say this because if I didn’t I wouldn’t forgive myself if something happened. Especially since I was the unfortunate person who had to experience a friend’s cat being killed in a recliner. It happened years ago but it is still very disturbing to me. I don’t think I will ever get past it. Recliners are not the best seating when you have cats. They can get under it and if you don’t check before getting up and closing it, they can get crushed and die a terrible death. Biggie, being Biggie is a cat that likes to check everything out and get into a lot of mischief. I’m just saying this out of an abundance of precaution. Off my soapbox.

No one was more shocked than me — but I found lots of cute recliners on lamps plus website. Check them out.

Maybe there is a way to devise some sort of cover up for a plain/not colorful/downright ugly chair? I have no clue how that might be done but you are so creative with all your sewing projects. You could have seasonally colorful chair covers!

I can tell you now that my chair is pretty comfy. Fairly firm. The options for reclining are many, and I especially like the independent operation of the back. The USB port is nice too.

It *is* pretty wide, though. I like the wide arms, and so do my cats---my old chair had wide arms. But the seating area is wide even for my fat ass, so I've gotten a couple of somewhat oblong pillows to have on either side of me, to support my arms when I'm just chillin'.

Unreclined, it's a pretty good chair for sitting and typing.

Good luck to you!

I keep my fellas' claws trimmed, but not super-vigilantly, and there are a few small scratches from their tearing around the room and chasing each other---back claws, probably, as I don't so much get after the tips of those. The scratches aren't visible unless you're up close, though, and if I buff them a bit, they can barely be felt.

That said, it's a thing that can happen to this kind of upholstery, fer sure. Guess that part'd come down to how much it'd bother you.

Re the leather thing, I was at my sofa retailer's shop picking out material to have them recovered when I heard a conversation going on between a woman who wanted her leather sofas recovered and the recoverer. The woman said that her cats had ripped the leather to shreds within eighteen months and she would never have leather again. And the recoverer said that leather was really attractive to cats. I'm not a leather fan anyway as I find it sticky in summer and cold in winter, but that was someone else's expensive lesson learned I got for free.

I bought one on Amazon a while back, and it is now my fish tank viewing station. Small, fabric, has a button on the side to pop out the foot rest. If the one you ordered doesn't work out I'll try to find a link.
