So while waiting for the new oven, I cleaned out the cupboard that holds stuff like spices, canned mushrooms, canned tuna, etc. I found a handful of things I will never use/eat and ditched 'em. I also found a box of Jiffy corn muffin mix and a box of Fisher corn muffin mix. I held those back.

The oven came. There was, indeed, a large dent in the back. No big deal. But, it was missing the air fryer basket. Bigger deal. I got into a chat with Amazon and asked them for $10 credit to make up for the missing bit and they gave it to me cheerfully and quickly.

I whipped up a batch of the Jiffy muffins. And set them to bake. After 17 minutes they looked like they had not even been heated. Except they were hot. Do I need to return this oven???? And splurge for a brand new one? Amazon will bring it tomorrow and take this one back but...

So I tested with toast. Perfect. Hmmmm

Checked the Jiffy Muffin box. Use By 7/28/2012.

SOOOO did you know that expired muffin mix won't muffin??? I did not. But, apparently, not all.

Whipped up the Fisher corn muffin mix. Use By 12/19/2016

Baked up fine and dandy. And the oven clearly works. The burn spot on my thumb is proof.

Honestly, if it didn't work, I would order up a new one lickety split and happily pay the $100 more. This oven is great. Easy to operate. The controls are eye level and very easy to understand and read.

If I were designing the kitchen of my dreams today, it would have tons of cabinets. One large fridge, one large freezer, on large sink with a disposal with wood chipper teeth, two induction hot plates and one of these ovens. The end. No dishwasher. No stove.

The Fraser corn muffins came out fine and smell good!

And, yeah, I get that I should maybe go through my staple food and check expiration dates once in a while. Maybe I'll put that in my chore app.

I have learned the hard way too that baking powder does indeed have a shelf life.

My dad called me one day and complained that his cake mix hadn't risen. Then told me it was 10+ years old.

The next day he called and told me that adding a spoonful of baking powder took care of that issue and he could still use his ancient cake mixes.

*laughs*

I was in a grocery store in the 00's and I saw a box of cake mix from the 70's.

That just cracks me up. Last week I tossed a box of Jifffy muffin mix expired in 2013! So, you aren't alone. Hah

my mom told me she had taken some cold medicine that didn't help her. Then she checked the expiration date and it expired in 2008!!

I have several spice things in the kitchen so old that they don't have UPC codes.

I think the oldest thing I have is a Durkee food color set that is marked 39 cents. The box is very faced. There is still liquid in the for bottles. 4 3/8 fl oz bottles.
I see one for sale on eBay for $10. A new equivalent on Amazon for $4.39.

I have no recollection of when or why I last used it, Or why I still have it.

Well, I know why we still have it. And why we won't still have it a year from now. (On last use, I have no clue.)
