I finally made some ginger cookies. My latest thing is to roll out the dough so it's one, large thin slab of cookie that I then cut into squares when it comes out of the oven. Today, the edges were fine but the center squares were too doughy. So after they cooled, I cooked them again. Biscotti cookies! Just the texture I wanted. Finally, some decent cookies in the house!

I just saw on Twitter that Microsoft is 45 years old today. Wild. I worked at IBM when Microsoft was a fledgling company that no one thought would go anywhere and then IBM hired them. So weird to think back to what we knew was true back then.

But, also, Twitter tells me that our fabulous former police chief - Carmen Best - has been hired as their Director of Security Risk Operations, Microsoft Global Security. She was a great police chief and fun and got the very short end of the Summer of 2020/Our Mayor Who Was An Idiot stick and was run off the job. I hope the opportunity is as good for her as it sounds like it might be. She deserves it.

And finally, a Biggie update. At the pet food store, I finally remembered catnip. I've never had a cat who was even remotely interested in catnip so it's not been on my radar but they had a great display of a bunch of different options. I got a little tub of it and also a small toy stuffed to the gills with it.

I came home and put the stuff away and then tossed the toy to YouKnowWho. This is what ensued for maybe 10 minutes without stopping.



I haven't even tried the stuff in the tub yet. How do you roll a kitty doobie?

I've pointlessly tried catnip on every feline crossing my path. I'd have brought some with me had it occurred. How funny.

When I was in high school we had a cat who didn't care for catnip, but LOVED the smell of cooking spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, you name it. There was one day my mom was making relish and she had a box of pickling spices on the counter. She realized she needed something to be able to finish so she and I made a quick trip to the store. When we got home, the cat (Academy) was on the floor with the box of pickling spices looking very much like Biggie in your photos.

My old cat Whiskey would just roll in a pile of it and make a big mess, but she loved rolling in the mess and would go crazy. My current cat Scout just like to eat it up like it's food. Then she just sits there staring with a crazy look in her eyes. If there's some in a toy, she tries to murder the toy.

A nice old (thick) sock with some catnip tossed in and the open end knotted makes a great refillable catnip toy. Smash it around a little after you knot it to crush the catnip and get the smell going (or later if you want to reactivate it), and you're good to go.

I remember back in my stoner days (such as they were) when visiting some stoner friends, one of whom accidentally spilled some of our (human-targeted) weed on the floor, and the cat seemed interested, so he hastily sprinkled some catnip in the same general area so the cat would concentrate on that and leave the grass alone.
