SteveTheLawyer is not letting moss grow on him! When I got back from the pool this morning, there was a group test (me, him and SamTheFriend). Steve had uploaded all the photos and videos from his visit to the house yesterday. Then about an hour later, after he had talked to SamTheFriend and DustinTheMooch, he called me.

SamTheFriend shares the estate with me. He is going over to the house tomorrow with Steve to help draft a plan to deal with it all.

Yesterday, Steve told me that Bill's 2019 Ford F150 pick up truck was not at the house so we assume he drove himself to the hospital (where he died). Today, Steve said he called the hospital. "I explained the situation and asked them to ask security to see if they could help find it." Whoever he was talking to did and came back with the message "Does he know we're in Oklahoma???" Apparently there are more than several 2019 Ford F150 pick up trucks in the hospital parking lot. But, turns out, Sam knows what it looks like so will help find it.

Dustin is the guy whose in charge of the ashes. But, Steve says, he's already made a few inappropriate requests for some of Bill's stuff. Steve, apparently, has no problem fending him off and made sure I was on board with that (I am). So, nice try, DustinTheMooch. Bill left you $500 and the ashes. Enjoy.

Steve told me yesterday that the house was a mess so I was prepared. And, yeah, it's a mess but I was able to see past that and find not only my cousin, but his parents in the mess. It's wonderful to see the old, tiny house again with the very same furniture. My aunt would have a fit if she could see the mess that is now her kitchen and her living room. She died in the early 70's and my uncle and cousin lived on in that house today for another 20 years until my uncle died. I'd bet my savings that the mess it is today began the week she died and Bill just built on what they had already started.

But, there is him in here. In the small kitchen, there is a clear path to the washing machine and dryer. And his jeans were hung carefully clamped at the ankles to create and preserve the pant leg crease. His shirts were on hangers. Fun to see that he'd branched out from the blue oxford cloth shirts he wore exclusively for years, to a few plaids. Frisky!

The big surprise and delight was a computer!! I'm sure it was not connected to any network but Steve is going to turn it on tomorrow and find out. The photo of his desk is yet another jumble of stuff. But one corner of that photo fascinates me.

It's like a TL;DR of the whole photo set. The computer monitor, the post it notes in Bill's careful and lovely handwriting. The rulers and templates. The hour glass. The salt shaker. The tooth picks.

In other photos, we can see he was totally ready for the apocalypse. He has enough toilet paper to last for decades. And a shocking amount of ammunition. Of course, to me, one bullet is a shocking amount of ammunition. But there are a whole lot of boxes (which may be empty) labeled as having ammo and then this:

Note: those two shirts were clearly not in his rotation. His regulars were hanging in the kitchen. Those two were pretty wild and crazy for Bill. Wonder how he even came by them!

Steve and Sam are going to call me from the house tomorrow.

I just got a group email of all his legal documents. He and Steve really crossed all the t's. Except one. There's a safety deposit box of which he is the sole owner. Steve thinks Chase will give him access if he can produce the documents that show him as in charge of the state with consent of me and Sam. He has no idea what's in the box. I'm hoping it has his mother's bracelets.

My aunt always wore a wrist full of sliver and turquoise bangles that, as a little girl, I thought was the most glamorous thing. My own mother said it was tacky (she thought Aunt Kay was pretty tacky), which only ramped up the glamour factor for me!

But SteveTheLawyer is really on top of everything with grace and humor and energy and some topnotch legaleze. He is really amazing and I am really grateful.

That looks a lot like the chair that Uncle Ray used to sit in.

I always envisioned bookshelves. He was the first person I knew who bought HARDBACK books. And he read a lot. And, I'm guessing never threw out any of them.

No movie of their garage. I was too young but was fascinated with all the tools and 'stuff' in their garage. Ray never threw out a tool and there were some ancient ones 60 years ago.

Looking at the house, it's even more of a joy that Bill had the foresight to tee up SteveTheLawyer.

I'm sorry you're going through this but isn't it a treasure having a helpful lawyer? When my friend Bruce died last year, the lawyer was an absolute gem. While he was still alive, he helped make sure all of the paperwork was done, and was set up in the best possible way, and after he passed he was super helpful, even reassuring me when I was selling the condo that I absolutely did not owe any money to the state. What a blessing it is to have a lawyer who truly cares and wants to actually help.

I will say that as long as you keep your beneficiaries up to date on any life insurance, checking/savings accounts, investment accounts, etc, that's like 90% of the battle. Oh, and if you use a password keeper, either giving them access to it with a time pause (e.g. if you use lastpass, you can add another person who can access your account with your permission after x number of days). Or just a list of passwords. It really helped with things like turning off the gas, etc. But to be fair, I had additional hurdles because I was not the legal next of kin (thank goodness Bruce's sister was so helpful or I don't know how I would have been able to get him cremated!). Bruce's lawyer situation was helpful partially because we knew there was a limited timeline. They added me to the condo, which meant it was mine, not something that had to be left to me. But I don't know if it would have made sense to add me earlier than that or if it would have been more of a headache in an alternate situation (for example, if I had died before he did).

I was talking with my friend from work, and we both said the ideal dying situation would be a few weeks of notice. Like, dying instantaneously sounds great, and I definitely don't want to be suffering for months and years, but given a situation like Bruce's where there was a clear end in sight and he was still lucid enough to make decisions, sign paperwork, etc, that feels like the ideal situation.
