A few years ago, I bought my current air conditioner. I sold its predecessor to a guy down the hall. The other day, I ran into him and he told me that after a year with my unit, he just went ahead and got one of those ductless units installed and LOVES it. He says it si far superior and cheaper to run in the summer and also cheaper than his baseboard heating in the winter.

So I've been thinking about it. If that $15,000 HOA bill turns out to be less, I might use the extra to get a system installed. Maybe. Some neighbors down the hall just had theirs installed last month. I've sent them an email asking all the nosy questions. There is an outfit who has installed most of the units that have been installed in this building so I sent them an email asking for info.

Probably the neighbors down the hall are going to say that installation was a royal PIA and then I'll find out it's going to cost $15,000 and they can't do it until next June and I'll just say fuhgitaboutit.

But, for now, I'm investigating. It makes me feel cooler.

Oh, just got a very nice email back from the company who sells and installs. They are coming out to assess and estimate on Friday, August 19 at 11. Cool. They are 4-6 months out from installation which is fine.

Interesting.

And now I am addicted to this cam.



I wish Biggie had a spot like this so I could 'cam' him but he's all over the place. I don't think he ever naps in the same place twice.

My son is considering one of those ductless air conditioners for his house, too. They seem to work quite well.

Are those the split aircon units, with the fan 'n' stuff outside, or something else? I know those go for around £4k here, not sure if that includes install. I've been very tempted to get one.

i think you might be thinking about a u shaped window unit with all th ecuts on the outside of the window. like this:

Ah yes, I'm definitely talking about the latter. I assume they get called split units because the units are literally split e.g. https://www.airconcentre.co.uk/collections/wall-split-air-conditioning-units. I have one in my office, and several others scattered around the school. I'm not sure I've ever seen the former type in the UK, but remember seeing them lots in New York City.

Edit: Based on the prices at the link above it's probably about right for a £3k install in the UK.
