ok. I have an idea about my living room arrangement. I want opinions. Here are the givens/goals/thots.

1. Ignore the clutter.
2. Ignore the gray square thing with the red on top between the couch and the red chair - it's leaving
3. I need better site lines
4. I need to keep the purple sofa/bed and the white chair
5. I need a place for the cat tree near the window and I might want to get a bigger tree
6. The a/c can move a little but not much - it will be gone by october but may be back
7 The white chair is too tall for the middle of the room

I'm thinking of swapping the white chair and the couch. I'd remove all the bolsters and pillows off the couch so it just becomes a bench. I'd angle it almost like the white chair is angled now.

I'd move the white chair so that it angled out from the corner to face the TV. Maybe even moving it out towards the middle of the room a bit. And putting the floor lamp in the corner behind it.

Thots? Ideas?

I've moved a lot, alas, and always put my furniture in in the same way. The reading chair is positioned so that I can take advantage of natural light for reading, and I usually get horizontal for TV viewing, so my love seat is positioned for that. I like how you have it; the only change I'd make is for the reading chair to be backed up to the window.

I meant the dark red one with the lamp behind it.

Does the red (?I think it's red?) chair under the fish picture have to stay there? And where is the TV?

I see.

So, I can't tell exactly what is off to the right corner of this picture, but I think if I remember correctly, it's that little skinny area that you have a small colorful curtain down.

If that is the case, I think I might try to put the purple couch against the wall where the red chair is right now, adjusting left as needed to make room. Then the cushions could still be utilized and a visitor could even lounge there without rolling off the back. Then put the red chair angling out from that corner the couch currently juts into, and angle the white chair more into the other corner that I cannot see into, but so that it creates a pathway through to the door, but still feels like it is up enough to not be looking like an "outcast" chair. That way it wouldn't stand in the middle of the room so much since the height bothers you. So you'd be created a semi circle, with a hole for the door and easy TV viewing from each seat.

However, I like to rearrange rooms. So I might set it up in the above way and then decide I didn't like it and change it the next day.... hahahah

Where do your sight lines need to be? From the red chair to both the window and the TV? Swapping the positions of the white chair and the couch would help with that, I think

I think the taller cat tree might be a good idea.

Is it horrible that I immediately started looking at all the things I should ignore?

I forget to specify that I looked because you told me not to. It's my rebel instinct.

chair arrangement

Susan as long as you don't use your fireplace, would the purple couch fit in front of it and then put the white chair back in the corner where the couch is right now. Here's a picture of what I mean, purple rectangle is your couch, white square is your chair.

I'll be interested in seeing if the couch in front of the fireplace works, it's hard for me to judge it's size and normally the only way I can decide on what looks good where is by moving it and then standing back to look at it.

I like Anonymous's idea! And if the sofa doesn't work in front of the fireplace, the white chair could totally fit there too!

I have a bench in front of my fireplace that I don't use, too :) Mine is from my kitchen table - I have 4 chairs and a bench if I need to seat 6 - but I never need to seat six so I needed a spot to put the bench :D

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! I love moving furniture around :D

I considered answering this, but it got too hard. I know ... I overthink things, but here are my thinky thoughts anyway...

I wondered if you wanted all the furniture to have the TV in their line of sight (or easily turned to do that). Maybe the white chair could easily pivot to do that? Also - is there enough room for the white chair to be on the dining table side? (Might not work and look bad) Maybe you could switch the red chair and the couch (angling the red chair towards the TV from that corner by the window) so that the white chair is out of the line of sight of the red chair. You could make the couch either horizontal to the wall or vertical depending on available space.

I also wondered if the couch would be comfortable if used more like a bench with the bolster pillows were removed. I gather that would happen if not placed against a wall.

Also - removing the fireplace from the line of sight (by placing the couch in front of it) seemed sad with such a beautiful stained glass fireplace screen.
