What a night
Sep. 30th, 2022 09:08 amMy ticket didn't sell by 4:15 so I hopped onto my scooter and headed for the ballpark. I tried hard to drink in every detail - last everything. As the evening wore on, this was no effort.
Almost all of my favorite ushers were on duty in my section! They knew this was my last game as a club member and they each made some time to come chat with me and make sure I promised to come back and visit.
My seat neighbors to the right were a really nice, fun, couple.
My seat neighbors to the left were a couple of bros - 25 going on 12. They were not really watching the game but swapping bro stories loudly. Proud of how they punched out this guy or got punched out by that one. Getting drunker by the inning. And spilling half of the free booze they were ordering until finally I had a pool of alcohol around my feet.
Cindy, my favorite usher, saw this and the cute couple and I watched as she snagged these guys coming back from the bar and explained appropriate behavior to them. She is little tiny and they were big bros and she had them over a barrel. It was pretty funny. But, it didn't work. They continued.
In the 7th inning she came over to me and asked if I'd rather move to the net. Er. yeah. Please.
Meanwhile, the M's took an early lead, then lost it, then got it back and by the 7th, it was 7-6, the Mariners holding onto a narrow lead.

They tied it up in the 8th. They took the lead in the 10th. We tied it. In the 11th, they slipped ahead again. And finally, in the bottom of the 11th, one of our funnest players who isn't a home run hitter but always there in the clinch, slammed the ball in between 1st and 2nd to send home the winning run.
It was magical. It was spectacular. It was exhausting. It was the best last game you could possibly ask for. Even better than tonight's game.
If Baltimore loses today OR if the Mariners win, the Mariners will play in the post season for the first time in 20 years. (The Baltimore game starts at 4 and the Mariner game starts at 6:30. The rest of the world will be watching the Baltimore game because they are playing the Yankees and one of the Yankees is 1 home run away from breaking a major, historical home run record. I don't really care as long as Baltimore loses. For the record, however, I still can't root for the Yankees.)
This is Julio during the game.

And in now very minor news, my Fitbit seems to have had its own Easter. I noticed last night that it was not losing its charge like it had been and this morning, it's still not. I turned off some features and may leave them off for a while to see what happens.
Today is planless. There will be baseball, of course, but otherwise, nothing on the agenda. I'm just going to remember last night for a while.

Date: 2022-09-30 10:57 pm (UTC)I enjoy rooting for plucky underdogs, and the Yankees (always) and Astros (since the trashcan debacle) are currently battling with the Dodgers (another always) for tops on my Do Not Want list. I will lend my emotional support, for whatever good it might do, to the M's for the AL postseason.

Date: 2022-10-01 02:53 pm (UTC)Congratulations to the Mariners, for whom I am going to root as far as they get, at least up to the World Series; there, it may depend on whether the Phillies (hanging on to their wildcard spot by a thread as I type) are still alive.
Nice that your last game was a good experience. AsI think I mentioned yesterday, our last game of the season was quite satisfactory, which was a welcome change from most of the games we've been to this season.
