Oct. 29th, 2022 03:51 pmI read that Fortune Feimster has a new special on Netflix. I never saw her first one so I tuned into that one first and there she was standing of the stage of the theater where I used to work!
She is from just outside Charlotte, NC and had gone home to do her special. She was in what they now call McGlohon hall.
In the early 80's I was living in Charlotte and needed a job. There was this new arts organization downtown that was getting ready to open a theater and they were looking for someone to head their marketing. WTF I can do that so I applied and got the job!
The theater had been the sanctuary of the original First Baptist Church in downtown Charlotte. (If you know anything about the South, you know that church is a massive BFD and Baptist is the king of all denominations and The First Baptist Church in every town is the numero uno of the relm.
In this case the church was really beautiful on the outside. They had done a fabulous job converting it to a small little (280 seat) performing arts theater.
It had a whole bunch of glorious stained glass windows which they had to cover, to get theater dark but they also backlit so that, when appropriate, they could light up. Like when Judy Collins gave a recital and sang Amazing Grace - pretty fucking dramatic actually.
Anyway it's a wonderful little place and there was Fortune right there on my stage! What a treat. And it's a pretty good show, too. Sweet and Salty

Date: 2022-10-31 10:01 pm (UTC)I enjoy standup. A good majority of what I watch on Netflix falls into that category.
